Donny boys post of the day!!! Let's talk cow chow! 🌱🌿🍞🍫

Did you know that our cows have their own nutritionist?!? It's true! What the ladies eat plays a vital role in their health and productivity! We feed an amino balanced diet to our cows to ensure we are producing high quality milk that can be made into butter, cheese, yogurt and all the best dairy goodies!

Once a week our nutritionist comes to the farm to make sure the ladies are getting the best diet that they can get. Her main focus is balancing the diets for each group of cows to make sure they get all the energy, protein, fiber and amino acids they need. We separate our cows into different groups ( think different grade levels. Pre k kids wouldn't be with 10th graders and it's the same with cows.) and they require different feed packages because of how much they are able/want to eat. A younger cow is not going to be able to eat as much as a big old cow but we want to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs to be successful and therefore the diet is balanced down to .02 pound accuracy to make sure that happens. Our cow diets consist of corn silage, haylage, corn meal, a protein source, fats and minerals and ....candy biproducts 😎🍫🍩🍭. Cows are amazing at utalizing by products that would typically go to landfills because they are not appropriate for human consumption! The cows are able to turn this into a part of their diet. Our cows eat 125 # of feed a day on average. And 3% of that is candy meal! You know what they say about keeping a lady happy 😜 give her some chocolate!

It is also very important that it is planned out ahead of time for how much feed we have vs how many cows need to be fed all year long. Because we can not go to Walmart or tractor supply to pick up more cow feed it is a big part of the nutritionist job to make sure that we are only feeding what we need and not letting a bunch go to waste.

Our cows are athletes when it comes to making milk and one of the best ways to ensure they are getting what they need is having people in our team who are dedicated to making their food perfect!

Donny Boy's post of the day!

Today Donny Boy got to meet up with our genetic specialists πŸ˜ƒ

During this meeting we talk about the genetics for our future animals. Animals that will be milking on this farm in 3 years from now! This can be everything from their udder shape, feet and legs, how big we want our animals to be and the fat and protein in their milk! Pretty impressive stuff can be selected from genetics when you think about it.

We also talk about how many heifers ( female calves ) we want to raise each year and calve in each month so we can grow or maintain the farm size. Since growing a replacement heifer is very expensive we don't want a large excess if we can help it, but we also want enough coming in to keep the wheel moving.

We talk about areas of improvement and how we can make those things happen or what could be affecting these areas.

It's all about working together to improve what we can to set us up for a successful future!

Donny boys topic of the day!

Ultrasounding and pregnancies 😎

It's no secret that in order for a farm to have a future we need to have offspring being born. Cows naturally start cycling in heat immediately after having their calf. Here on our farm we have a voluntary waiting period to give our ladies time to heal and recover. They typically go through 3-4 " heats" prior to being inseminated. This equates to right around 65 days after having a calf before they will even be bred if they show a heat. Some of our ladies need a little longer and go closer to 90 days before they get bred for the first time and that's ok!

After being inseminated 35-40 days later we will check them to see if they are pregnant or need to be bred again. Here on our farm we check cows one day a week based on how many days ago they were inseminated. I will include a couple pictures. The smaller fetus is 38 days old. At this point we will see a heart beat and the sac but no real body parts yet. The next picture is a baby at 70 days and here you can very clearly see a head and they will be moving around and kicking. Pretty amazing if you ask me 😍

Donny boys topic of the day πŸ„ Hoof Trimming!
Hoof trimming is a critical component of dairy cow welfare, directly impacting the animal's mobility, comfort, and productivity. Regular and correct trimming prevents lameness.
1. 🎯 Why Hoof Trimming is Essential
The cow's foot is constantly growing. In a natural, non-domesticated environment, this growth is worn down by walking long distances over varied, abrasive terrain. In modern farming, cows often spend significant time on concrete or soft bedding, which doesn't provide enough natural wear. Aka the ladies are spoiled 😎
Prevents Lameness: Correctly balanced hooves distribute weight evenly, reducing pressure on sensitive areas. Sometimes a cow might step on a rock and that can be very uncomfortable to walk on especially when you 1300 pounds!
Improves Mobility & Comfort: A comfortable cow is more likely to travel to feed, water, and the milking parlor, leading to better overall health and milk production/weight gain.
Reduces Risk of Infection: Overgrown hooves can create pockets where manure and bacteria accumulate, leading to common conditions like digital dermatitisand sole ulcers so we want to make sure they are looking good!

Each of our cows are routinely trimmed twice a year on our farm to ensure their comfortable! If they need to be seen before then we have a hoof trimmer here twice a week that will look at them and determine what needs to be done to get them back to perfect.

Donny Boy is looking pretty pleased with the final product!

First topic by Donny Boy!

Activity systems πŸ˜€

When it comes to activity systems there are many different kinds. Collars (like we utilize) ear tags, rumen boluses and ankle monitors. The dairy industry has done a good job at adapting to technology as it is changing and we use it for the health of our herd! Activity systems tell how much time a cow is sleeping, eating, socializing and everything In between. Some systems have temperature equipped as well! This helps our dairy to make sure the cows are healthy. If they are getting up to eat as much as they should be or if they are in heat! It also alerts us when maybe our cows are not feeling well and we need to check them which is so important to getting them better as fast as we can. As much as I wished they did they unfortunately don't come to tell us when they are feeling under the weather πŸ˜•

The blue part on the bottom of the collar in the picture is the "computer" part of our system. Everyday it sends that information back to the computers in the office so we can look at it and gather the information. Here you can see how often she is being active, whether that is eating, socializing, or being milked.
