Diane and Steve O’Brien cleared pasture land and built a small barn on their rural property in Windham, Maine. Baker Brook Farm officially began in 1998 when our son, Alan, decided to join The Cumberland County All Star 4H Dairy Club. He began raising a few dairy heifers that he showed at several local fairs. Alan’s farming interest continued to grow while participating in 4H, so each year he added to his herd. Soon we had three different breeds consisting of Holsteins, Ayrshires, and Jerseys.
Alan expanded his knowledge by first working as a farm laborer and an understudy to the herdsman at a local dairy farm. He grew proficient in animal husbandry along with milking, treating, and caring for a dairy herd. His work and 4H experience cultivated his desire to manage his own dairy herd. In 2009, we moved our entire 4H foundation herd over to 65 Merrill Road in Gray, Maine.
Alan, a second generation dairy farmer, began milking and managing over 50 dairy cows and heifers, as well as, harvesting hay and maintaining all the hay equipment. He became Oakhurst’s youngest milk producer. Today Baker Brook Farm has grown to over 120 cows and young stock.
We are excited to provide rich quality 100% local milk as a local farmer. Be comforted to know that we do not use artificial hormones and our cows are treated kindly. You will notice a difference in the fresh taste of our milk!
