This post is not meant to be political, bash or take a political side.
I simply am tired of farmers being used as a political footbal. Facts being misrepresented and people being tossed what ever way the wind blows.
Here is the facts.
You (Farmers) have always been able to process your meat if you put a state-inspected or USDA facility up.
As a woman who has raised thousands of birds and 20–30 hogs for pork each year, I can tell you this executive order won't do a thing to break up the Big Four. What would make a difference is if Trump directed the DOJ to enforce the antitrust, anti monopoly laws.
The PRIME Act, which would have been actual law—not an executive order that the next president could simply do away with—would have allowed state-inspected meat to be sold to restaurants and stores within that state.
This was a political move without any real power or corrective action behind it.
FYI, here are the facts:
• I can legally slaughter and process up to 1,000 birds in my state and sell them directly from my farm without a facility, under the applicable poultry exemption.
• I can use a state-inspected processor for hogs and sell the meat at farmers markets and directly off the farm.
• I can use a USDA-inspected processor for hogs and sell the meat to restaurants, stores, or across state lines.
What I can't do is have a hog slaughtered on the farm and then sell that meat at a farmers market through a mobile processor.
I also can't have a family slaughter a hog and then take the carcass home to process themselves if the intent is to sell that meat.
The PRIME Act would have allowed for mobile state-certified processors to operate on farms, allowed individuals to slaughter livestock and take the meat off the farm, and allowed state-inspected meat to be sold to restaurants and stores within the state.
What we need are incentives for more people to build meat-processing plants. Farmers don't have the time—or the desire—to take on that kind of debt.
We can't do it all ourselves.
