The newest member of the herd is a pure longhorn and I believe a heifer! This is the first calf out of Ms. Christmas and I'm pleased that both are doing well. The new calf has been caught sleeping outside of the fence and I expect that we'll be bringing mom and calf into the more secure pasture fence for safety.

An interesting behavior I have observed over the years with several groups of calves is that they prefer to lie down near the yaks over their own mothers. In this photo his mom Patty is resting in the woods with the other cows while her calf remains with the yak. The yaks must provide an additional sense of security and safety to the little ones in the herd.

Patty is one of those moms that is very protective of their calves. While aggression is not desirable with livestock I prefer to have a few cows that ensure all the calves are protected from any threat. Usually after a few days she settles down, but she is to be respected.

Hiked the goats this morning to fresh pasture away from the farmstead. This 3/4 acre site will be converted to pollinator habitat this Fall but in the meantime we're letting the goats mow the grass and eat invasive shrubs.
