The Sussex County Board of Agriculture will hold it’s traditional Chicken BBQ on Saturday, September 19th at the Sussex County Fairgrounds from 5 to 7 pm. This annual fundraiser for the Sussex County Board of Ag helps support scholarships for Sussex County students seeking a career in agriculture, the 4-H shows with ribbons and awards at the NJ State Fair, 4-H ers traveling to National livestock shows, Young Farmers and Ranchers programs and educational trips and programs for Sussex County Farmers.
This Sussex County tradition has continued since 1941. The savory BBQ chicken is flavored with time tested Charles Pratschler’s famous recipe. The chicken is slow roasted by Board of Ag members. In addition to delicious chicken, diners will receive sweet corn on the cob from Ideal Farms and the DeGroot Family Farm. Local red ripe tomatoes come from Green Valley, Anderson, and Lentini farms. The buttery rolls are from The Holland American Bakery. The delicious meal is topped off with yummy chocolate chip cookies for desert.
Dave Yarrington, a retired music and band teacher, will provide music this year. Dave sang in bands for 20 years before going out solo. Yarrington features the classic songs of the 60’s through today, songs we all can sing along with. A cash bar with b**r and w**e has made this festive BBQ a tradition. This BBQ brings together the local farmers and the general public for great comradely and fun.
Tickets are $22 in advance, and may be purchased at Anderson Farms, Brodhecker Farms, Hidden Pastures, Ideal Farms, Lentini Farm, Space Farms, Sussex County Fairgrounds and online at sussexcountyboardofagriculture.org . A limited amount of tickets will be available at the BBQ for $25. Don’t miss out - get your tickets ahead of time. The Sussex County Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market at the Fairgrounds will be open on Saturday, August 22nd, 10am to 2pm for your shopping pleasure! Open every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, the Sussex County Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market helps support local farmers, 4-H ers, and neighbor artisan crafters. Farm fresh eggs from Brodhecker Farm will add yummy deviled eggs for your picnic this summer. Fresh local veggies are from Ideal Farms. Yumm! Brodhecker Farms, Ideal Farms and Daisy Fields Bakery are working in cooperation with 4-H kids, who will receive a percentage of the sales! SPECIAL THIS WEEK: a" Host a Little Ghost" book (See previous post). Local artisans have been working hard to present their finest works of art just for you. Sparkly jewelry, wooden artistic signage, beautiful photographic prints featuring Sussex County, handmade themed tote bags, unusual wooden lanterns, novelty towels and crocheted items, and other unique craft items are great to brighten your home. Hand crafted goat soaps can help make your very own-at home-spa day. Give someone you love a Big Bear Hug Pillowcase! Our Farm Photo Contest is open to the public. Information and applications to submit your photos by October 10th are available. ANNOUNCING!!! A PHOTO CONTEST at the Sussex County Farmers and Crafters’ Market! The contest is for any age photographers. We will have four categories: Barns, and/or Farm Animals for 18+ years old, Barns and/or Farm Animals for under 17 years old. Be sure to ask your farmer if you may take a picture of his/her barn and/or animals. NO TRESPASSING! Application forms may be picked up at the Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market starting July 11, from 10 am to 2 pm. 8X10 Photos should be submitted matted in white, and will be returned to the photographer. Photos may be taken all summer to be submitted to the Farmers and Crafters Market on October 10th . The General public and the vendors of the Market will vote on the photos on display at the Market until November 28th. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners at 1pm on November 28th. The Sussex County Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market is open the 2nd and the 4th Saturdays of the month, (except August 8 due to Fair). We are located at 37 Plains Road, August at the entrance to the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Hope to see you there and please share.
