With thunderstorms in the forecast for market day, we won’t be set up this Friday. (Glad for the rain!) We’ll keep our yarns, soaps, and especially the flax fiber dry at home this week. And we’ll be looking forward to seeing you next week at the Susquehanna Valley Growers Market in Hufnagle Park, Lewisburg, PA.

This is how we build soft, strong, renewable textile from the ground up.

I used to hate the job of skirting fleeces, removing all the gross stuff.

But now I love it.

What changed?

Not only does the texture under my fingertips feel good, grounding and centering me in the present, but more importantly, I get tangible feedback on how the past year went on the farm. It’s not a supervisor telling me how I did. It’s not someone telling me what my goals should be for the coming year. It’s just me and the fleece, assessing, making decisions, celebrating the harvest (or sometimes grumbling about burrs!), and charting a path forward.

This is how I know that every fiber leaving my farm to become yours - your clothing, your craft, your art - is excellent. This is how the health of the soil affects the health of the animals and in turn affects the quality of your textile. And this is how we build soft, strong, renewable textile from the ground up.

Happy last day of school to those who celebrate! 😅 And happy Friday, friends. You know where to find me this afternoon - at the Susquehanna Valley Growers Market in Lewisburg, PA. What a fantastic group of farmers - you know what’s at each of our tables is harvested right from our farms. I’ll have the usual homegrown wool & wool yarns, flax fiber, and chicken eggs, as well as sheep milk, flax, and herbal soaps I’ve crafted in my own farmhouse kitchen. Stop by and take a slice of farm life home with you!

This variety of flax is coming along nicely, though you can see from the cracked soil that we need rain. Interested in spinning some of our homegrown flax into linen? We have hand-processed tow available by the ounce at the Susquehanna Valley Growers Market in Lewisburg, PA, every Friday afternoon. Find us there with flax, wool rovings, yarns, linen and sheep milk soaps, and fresh, free range duck eggs and chicken eggs.

This one is for all of you who are growing flax for linen fiber on a garden scale. (Clearly w**ding by hand is not feasible on a field scale!)

First of all, this post does not cover w**d prevention, which is critical. It’s worth the extra effort in prevention to avoid the w**dy situation you see here!

What it does show is when and how I hand w**d. I like the size of the flax (small) and the non-flax plants here - the flax will recover, and the w**ds are substantial enough to grab but the roots are not established enough to disturb the plants around them when they’re pulled out.

My favorite time to w**d, though it’s a little messy, is right after a nice rain. The soil becomes soft and the plants I want to remove come right up. It makes my hands a little muddy, but it beats fighting dry soil or breaking the tops off tough w**ds just to have them come back.

How is your flax patch coming along this season? Let me know in the comments!

Shoutout to who have brought a lot of attention to the relationships between agriculture, textile, and human connection. Keep going, friends!
