Grooming time! Mojave and Chaco are best buds! They like to romp and play and sometimes they just like to make out behind the chicken coop! 😜😍 ðŸĨ°

This is the sweetest "family photo" of Lilac the ewe, her biological ram lamb (kneeling down), and her foster ewe lamb in the middle (look at her leaning into mom!) â™Ĩïļ. Lilac adopted this ewe lamb when she was 1 day old from another ewe that had more lambs than she could feed! Ewes generally will not accept orphan lambs but Lilac took to this baby girl readily. Of course I presented the orphan when Lilac was actively birthing her own lamb. I smeared the orphan in placenta and amniotic fluid. Lilac simply believed she had given birth to the baby girl! Sheep are not known for their intelligence but you'd be surprised how quick they can be. In this case, however, I'm grateful for Lilac's ignorance because this baby girl needed a mama and hand rearing lambs with formula is no match for a ewe mama's TLC 💕

Some photos from lambing 2026. As usual, the experience was a combination of joy and accomplishment along with some bitter disappointment. I successfully grafted a triplet lamb onto a different ewe who only had a single (the triplet's dam did not have the milk production to support all three lambs). This was a triumph as fostering can be very difficult to achieve. I also experienced my first true breech delivery where the lamb presents rear end first with all four legs extending toward the ewes head. I managed to deliver the lamb within 30 minutes or so but unfortunately she was stillborn and the twin that followed presented backwards and experienced oxygen deprivation with resulting neurological symptoms. She also did not survive. All told, we still managed a beautiful crop of lambs this year and while I'm relieved to be done, I'm also excited for what 2027 will bring! ðŸĨ°ðŸ˜ĩ‍ðŸ’ŦðŸĪŠðŸðŸðŸ

This whopping 13lb baby boy was born last night despite the fact that lambing season is officially 5 weeks away! How's that?? Well a sneaky, randy Bramble ram managed to get in with the ewes last September 🙄. He wasn't with them long, but Freesia the ewe was ready for him. Lucky he only managed to knock up one!😅

Fall means breeding time on the farm! Ovine love is in the air! 🐏🐑âĪïļ Hunky stud ram Dandelion and the up and coming young Bramble are rocking special "marking" harnesses that hold colored wax crayons to their raddles, or chests, that showcase that the deed has been done, "waxing" the f***y of the accommodating lady. Often evident from across the field! And this way, we have a convenient means of determining a due date for the ewes gestation. Low tech but highly efficacious!

Donks can do farmwork! Chaco helps fertilize and overseed the hayfield. He is my best working donk - strong, steady, and willing ðŸĨ°.

A snippet of Meadow helping me move a group of ewes and lambs that slipped through a hole in the back pasture fence back where they belong. One of the ewes got a bit defensive, but Meadow stood her ground after a bit of hesitation. Good job, farm dog! 🐑🐑🐑ðŸķ
