The way Rooted Local works is incredibly simple: we visit the top small-scale regenerative farms in Texas, build friendships with the farmers, and pay fair market prices for their meat. Customers like yourself then get access to their nutrient-dense, high quality meat by becoming a Rooted member.

Once you sign up, we’ll pack your meat in either 10 or 20 lb boxes (just beef, beef + chicken, beef + chicken + pork) & hand-deliver it to you the last weekend of every month. We’ll never ship your meat in the mail. We’ll never source from foreign countries (or even outside of Texas!) All of our meat is corn & soy free. All of the animals we source spend their entire lives outdoors & have the highest quality of life possible.

Our food system is broken. We’re doing things a different way.

Industrial / big agriculture thinks of farming & husbanding animals as a system in need of technological perfection. The farm becomes a factory whose singular goal and concern is to export the maximum calories for the most amount of profit possible.

The accounting for such a system does not include the soil, the farmers quality of life, the livestock, the community they feed. All it is concerned about is money.

It’s Rooted’s belief that when farming shifts from an ancient art motivated by love to a profit-maximizing business guided by fear, all roads inevitably lead to less nutrient dense foods accompanied by chemicals like glyphosate, destroyed local ecosystems, and a host of other unpleasant side effects.

Farms are not factories. Farmers can’t ignore biology, they can’t ignore ecology. Good farmers acknowledge limits & shape their artistry to the specific needs of their place. Misinformed farmers ignore limits & try to overcome them with more debt, more machines, and more chemicals.

At Rooted we are trying to find & support & build back a network of Texas farmers who love their land, love their work, and take seriously their responsibility as stewards. We view it as our responsibility to provide you with an easy alternative to the industrial system. At Rooted we view it as imperative that the conversation around regenerative extends past just how much carbon you can sequester and extends into the human realm of how we as consumers think about, treat, and support the folks responsible for growing our food.

Farmers increasingly approach their work holistically and with curiosity & humbleness. The accounting of regenerative farming moves from thinking about solely revenue to including the soil, the livestock, the wildlife, and their local communities in the decision making process.

To regenerate the sacred cycle of nature, farmer, and consumer is to revive and breath life into the importance of valuing and honoring where our food comes from and how it is grown.

The way we currently engineer our way into food production with the help of massive machines, chemicals and debt is the definition of unsustainable.

The more we can move from a farming highly reliant on external inputs (oil, gas, cash crops) and into one reliant on the sun, water, and seasons, the more “regenerative’ and “sustainable” our future and our children’s future becomes.

All our products come vetted from farms using the highest standards.

Standards for our beef:
- Must be outside all of their lives with access to fresh water, minerals, and natural grasses that come straight from the earth
- Rotationally grazed to fresh pasture
- No antibiotics, GH, chemical fertilizers/pesticides/herbicides, or GMO seed
- Handled humanely with love, no electric shock

Standards for our chicken:
- Must be outside all of their lives with room to scratch, peck, and forage
- Must have access to clean fresh water at all times
- Supplemental feed must be non-GMO and never contain any corn or soy
- No antibiotics
- No beak trimming or wing clipping

Standards for our pork:
- Must be outside all of their lives in pasture or forest with room to dig, root, and forage
- Must have access to clean fresh water at all times
- No antibiotics or growth hormones ever
- Supplemental feed must be non-GMO and never contain any corn or soy
- No nose rings or any other modifications that prevent species appropriate behavior

Sorry, we don’t ship our meat in the mail! And we never will. But why?

There are plenty of great operations that ship their products to the mail if you live somewhere where it’s hard to support local food systems and get healthy food.

Our focus is on stabilizing and supporting the small local producers who can’t sell into the big outfits that demand massive supply.

All of our products come from Texas, and all of our products stay in Texas.

We are starting with the Austin area and with your support will be able to expand to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and beyond.

Did you know grass-fed doesn’t always mean clean and naturally raised with love?

Some grass-fed producers feed their cattle grass-based pellets mixed with sorghum syrup and other weird things so they can simply say “grass-fed” on the label. A lot of the other ones will still plant GMO seeds into the soil and spray pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers all over so they can push the cattle past what nature allows. Not at Rooted.

We visit each ranch we source from and carefully vet their practices to make sure no funny business is going on and you have animals that are raised as nature intended. It takes much more time and work, but there’s no other way to know unless you go visit and shake hands with your rancher.

Where does your dollar go when you buy your food?

Since WW2 the number of farms in America has decreased from 7 million to less than 2 million farms.

The US proclaimed farming “Get Big or Get Out”, in the 1970s favoring massive industrial operations.

Small scale farms producing food on a human scale were quickly replaced by massive industrial farms raising only corn, wheat, and soy with the help of insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides.

The diversity of food sources that was a hallmark of American farming culture quickly fell apart.

Diversity in nature is a hallmark of a resilient ecosystem. A more resilient Texas economy is one with hundreds of flourishing small-scale farms. With more farms spread out across the state, no single failure jeopardizes the rest of the state’s food production.

Small-scale regenerative farms are not reliant on fertilizer produced in a war torn country. They are significantly less reliant on feed from the four big cash crops (corn, soy, wheat, rice). They don’t rely on on corporate supply chains.

Soil, grasses, and carbon are all important. But they are all downstream of diligent, careful, loving farmers.

The more we invest as a culture in local farmers who are doing the work of place-based, regenerative farming, the healthier our soil, our grasses, our plants, our livestock, and thus our bodies become.

That is the goal of Rooted: to make it easy for Texans to eat nutrient dense food produced by local, regenerative farmers who love their land & work. To make it easy to support farmers who earn an honest living while maintaining the integrity and health of their land, their animals, and their products.

Because we at Rooted believe the collective health of us as Texans follows the flow of our dollars, of what we choose as a community to financially support. The more we separate wellness from good farmers & local, nutrient dense food, the further we stray from addressing the root issues that are so negatively affecting our collective health.

We won’t have lasting change in Texas until we change the way we as consumers show up for local producers. No brand can come close to the nourishment which comes with food raised locally with reverence. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish with Rooted, to make it easy as possible for Texans to consume this type of food on a consistent basis.
