Kale yeah! The cold makes it super crispy and sweet due to increased sugar production. And the pests have gone dormant, so no worries there.

Lettuce rejoice. The wind uncovered the lettuce I tried to protect but ha, joke’s on Satan; aside from a few frost burned leaves it all looks good, along with everything else at Happy Hyphae. Next week will be a different story with a low of 22!

So I’m covering this patch of lettuce, but everything else growing at Happy Hyphae is cold tolerant and many things will improve with flavor. Thanks to all the neighbors who came out this Sunday. Good luck to all with the coming freeze.

Allison, if you still want this broccoli you should come get it today before real winter blows into town. I’ll harvest it regardless and save it for you, but just you.

De Cicco broccoli on the curbside bed at 2200 Bristol is ready for harvest. The main heads only get about 3-4 inches, but there are plenty of side shoots that will keep coming throughout the season. I enjoyed some the other night, steamed and with a bit of Parmesan. Great size for stir fry. Theres’s a knife on the picnic table for harvesting you can return when you’re done.

Carrots coming along. Gonna have a picking party when they done sizing up. If you’ve never pulled a carrot out of the ground, I recommend the experience. It’s akin to the satisfaction of pulling out a splinter, but you can eat it! Once you taste a garden carrot, store bought just don’t taste right anymore. Stay tuned.

De Cicco broccoli are ready for harvest. I steamed 3 last night and ate them with Parmesan. The main heads don’t get much bigger than 3 inches, but there’s plenty of side shoots that keep coming. Big bed by the curb at 2200 Bristol Drive.

The wild arugala loved that recent storm and has put out so many blooms. I was about 20 feet away and heard the sound of what must have been several dozens bees busy as can be hitting each flower. The buzz was so thick I decided to lean over and put my face as close as I could for a nice sound bath.

You’ve heard of herding kittens, try counting bees. After that near inch of rain yesterday they’re getting busy with all the new blooms from my wild arugala. There must have been several dozen. I put my head down as close as I could and the buzz was like a facial sound bath. Give it a try, but don’t sneeze.

Early morning is always the best time for the freshest harvest, especially with warmer unseasonable temperatures as the plants take in moisture from the leaves in order to avoid water loss to evaporation. You also see fleeting colors you can’t see any other time of day that can last just a little longer in your soul.

There’s a 12 foot row of golden boy beets sizing up for harvest mid January. They’re a smaller but sweet beet that’s a personal favorite of mine. Down the street there’s a big bed full or red beets that will be ready in February. There’s always something growing on at Happy Hyphae. Feel free to visit and check in, and/or just breathe in that fresh veggie oxygen.
