On September 13, 1766, Samuel Wilson was born in Massachusetts. During the War of 1812, he supplied beef to U.S. troops, stamping barrels with “U.S.” Soldiers began calling the food from “Uncle Sam,” and the nickname stuck. Over time, Uncle Sam grew into the symbol we all recognize today.
