KarliHaus Brewery

KarliHaus Brewery Local Craft Brewery Founded in 2011 by a Father and his two sons after Dad and eldest son visited a local brewery, it remains a family endeavor.

KarliHaus is a Home Brewery producing specialized beers brewed by Karlis for Karlis, and of course for the closest friends of Karlis. Highlight of our brewery to date is 3rd Place in the Hop Forward category of the 2013 Austin Homebrew Supply competition with our RyePA.

While summer officially starts tomorrow morning no one bothered to tell the heat that has been in place in Austin, and much of the rest of the central USA the past few weeks. We even upgraded to some insulating drinkware to help us survive!!!

We also planned ahead and revisited one of our first original recipes, review from the Assistant Brewmaster below. L'chaim!!!

KarliHaus RyePA—Updated Review

The fifth original recipe produced by KarliHaus Brewery was Brewmaster Matthew Karli’s RyePA in September, 2013. At the time it won third place in the Hops Forward division of the home brew competition sponsored by Austin Homebrew Supply.

Brewing the RyePA for the 11th time Matthew decided to double the amount of hops used in the dry-hopping. The tweaked result has the same clean, crisp bitterness of the original, but with hops just bit more forward in a very positive way. The solid rye maltiness still provides the base but the additional dry-hopping adds a new dimension.

The tweak to the original recipe is likely here to stay!

Brewed May 7, 2022. Bottled May 21, 2022. Tasted June 11, 2022. 5.0% ABV. Review by Robert Karli

We have significant respect for the roots of craft brewing in Austin, hence the Celis Brewery glassware holding our flagship KarliFest lager during brew day on this hot and steamy first Saturday of May in Austin. Another batch of KarliFest was bottled, and a fresh batch of KarliRyePA was brewed. L'chaim!!!

While we've been a bit quiet here production has continued during the pandemic.

Our most recent endeavor has been to collaborate with some of the women of Austin Mustard Seed who in their reading of The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr learned about the role of medieval alewifes in the production of Ale prior to the Black Death and were inspired to step into this historical role.

KarliHaus Brewery was thrilled to participate by providing 100% of the necessary facility and equipment, as well as 100% of the funding for this effort We brewed a slightly modified version of our KarliBlonde Ale. The women of Austin Mustard Seed dedicated a large portion of the labor under the guidance of KarliHaus Brewery Brewmaster Matt Karli including wrapping up bottling earlier today. 2 week bottle conditioning carbonation to go then we'll have a tasting.

We also created a custom label for the beer bottles and utilized the public domain artwork from English baroque age painter David Loggan with his work "Mother Louse" who was apparently a notorious alewife in the mid 17th century.

We are living in uncharted times and uncharted times call for newly charted paths. In that spirit Matthew Karli, Brewmaster of KarliHaus Brewery, was inspired to take us in a new direction—our first pilsner. The result is KarliHaus Pandemic Pilsner. Beautiful to the eye as it is refreshing to the taste, this is a classic pilsner: light but brightly flavorful, easy on the hops with the slightest hint of caramel sweetness, leading to a crisp and clean finish. This one is a keeper and we will brew it again soon. And yet again when COVID-19 is nothing but a bad memory but our first pilsner Is a good one. Brewed March 21, 2020. Bottled May 9, 2020. Tasted May 23, 2020. 4.84% ABV. Review by Robert Karli

On March 21st the Co-founder and CFO of KarliHaus Brewery presented Christine Celis of Celis Brewery with a vintage poster from their brewery. It happened to be, what would have been, the 94th Birthday of Pierre Celis the original brewery founder. Serendipity.
