Please join us Saturday as we journey (by way of wine) to the birthplace of Chardonnay…Burgundy in Central France! No region in France (or perhaps the world) has the millennia of grape-growing history, tracing back to the Roman empire and then the medieval monks that perfected the cultivation, terroir classification and winemaking of this little berry born of Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc. The monks learned that the diverse set of low, rolling slopes (exposure) combined with the ancient Jurassic-ero fossil-rich seabed soils (Kimmeridgian soils) yielded a large array of subtle and crisp expressions of the grapes grown on them. Terroir and tradition are kings here, not oak and fancy winemaking tricks. C’mon downtown and taste four classic expressions of Chardonnay from the southern region of Burgundy!

C’mon downtown Saturday for a taste of four of our favorite white wines for Springtime! All are distinctively NOT Chardonnay and offer a little something different. We’ll start with a Soave from the Veneto - pique your nose for an aroma of springtime cherry blossom (a key aroma component of the Garganega grape) but be prepared for a wonderfully mineral palate. Next, we’ll journey to France for two crisp whites - a Costières de Nîmes Blanc featuring five Rhône white varietals led by Roussane and Grenache Blanc followed by a green-focused Bordeaux Blanc with four varietals led by Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. We’ll wrap on the volcanic slopes of Sicily with an Etna Bianco made of mostly Carricante - see if you can smell the sea spray and the volcanic rock…

Spring rains (and now sun + humidity) are here! C’mon downtown Saturday for a taste of four vibrant Old World whites perfect for this weather! We’ll start off with a white blend from Orvieto in Central Italy featuring indigenous grapes you may not have heard of (Procanico,, Grechetto with a smaller portion of Verdello and Malvasia). We’ll follow with three French whites - a crisp, citrus-driven Organic Luberon Blanc made from mostly Vermentino (called Rolle in France), a white Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon from Pierre Lurton (Managing Director of Ch. Cheval Blanc) and we’ll wrap with an un-oaked Burgundian Chardonnay from the more southern climes of Saint-Véran…with a bit of something to satisfy both the minerality lover as well as someone who might prefer New World Chardonnay.

Our elder wine buyer is off to France, first for a few days in Burgundy, then for the grueling tastings of the latest vintage of Bordeaux (2025s, not yet in bottle, mind you) at En Primeurs hosted by the Union Grand Crus Bordeaux. This is not the easiest part of the wine business, tasting young Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot‑based wines at a seriously wicked pace. But, in our estimation, and in the effort to offer the best selection from Bordeaux to our discerning clientèle, it is work that must be done. But, it's also a good idea to keep a spare toothbrush handy. Come Saturday afternoon, we'll be showing a few bottles in a bit better place for enjoying in the here and now…So c’mon downtown for a taste!

TASTING INFO:
Happy Easter! C’mon downtown Saturday for a taste of three delightfully refreshing wines from Château de Mille (including their freshly-released 2025 rosé - it’s like spring in a glass!) Luberon is a sub-region in the heart of Provence, just north of Aix-en-Provence and about 65 miles northeast from Marseille. Château de Mille is the oldest wine estate in that region, it also served as a summer residence of the Avignon Pope (check out the “Clefs” or keys on their labels - similar imagery to Châteauneuf-du-Pape). The Château covers a large 116 hectares, 25 of those are north-facing and under vine - helping to reduce exposure to to the generous Provençal sun and sitting upon a plateau of a wide variety of soil types (limestone, quartz and sand from the Eocene epoch). The Château has a generous population of organically grown (Ecocert certification in 2022) old vines (50-70 year old Grenache, Syrah and Carignan) but their terroir (gentler sun, challenging soils and the Mistral winds) help preserve freshness and levity in their wine, as well as their pursuit of a biodynamic certification in 2025!

C’mon downtown Saturday for a taste of three wines from Alois Lageder in the Alto Adige - a region where Italy cozies up to the Dolomites (of the Alps) at the Swiss and Austrian borders and Italian and German languages coexist. Alois Lageder is a 6th generation family-owned winery founded in 1823. Today under the leadership of Clemens and Helena Lageder, they area pioneering leader in biodynamic (organic) viticulture and biodiversity on their own land and in partnership with their growers. They also lead in sustainability utilizing solar and creating/utilizing an “open source” lightweight glass bottle design. Millennia of geologic activity in the Alto Adige created over 150 different soil types, from volcanic to decomposed stone to limestone. Meanwhile, the Dolomites hold back the cold mountain air and create a “rain shadow” while allowing the warm mediterranean air to rise from the south - this means warm days (to hot in the valleys) and cool nights. Please join us to experience this terroir in a taste of their Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay - all three highly chill able and perfect for summer!
