Dearest Friends,

Words cannot fully capture our gratitude for your kind words and the outpouring of love following the announcement of our closure. Your support has truly touched our hearts and serves as a profound reminder of the impact we’ve had together on this incredible industry.

So many of you began your journeys with us—whether as attendees, competitors, teachers, judges, or vendors. We remember those early days fondly, like when Natalie Sideserf entered her first cake at our show, perfecting her hippopotamus creation in the Make It Sweet kitchen. And the very next year, her Willie Nelson cake went viral! Or Sachiko Windbiel’s unforgettable cupcake creations, showcasing famous people in bubble baths—there were more cupcakes than we could count! And who could forget Liz Marek teaching her first class or Avalon Yarnes or Timbo Sullivan making their debuts with us? Attendees traveled from around the world to attend our show.

We’ll always cherish the encouragement of our dear friend Chef Nicholas Lodge, who believed in us from the start. Whether we were crammed into a culinary school hallway or growing into something much bigger, he was there every step of the way. Together, we built the Innovator Award to recognize groundbreaking contributions to the industry and created a code of conduct to protect against cheap knock-offs, because we cared deeply about upholding the integrity of our craft.

It has been our honor to host the first American classes for international stars like Dorothy Klerck, Laura Saporiti, Marta Hidalgo, and Margherita Ferrara. Far too many to name them all! We strived to bring you the best instructors, judges, and new talent while taking risks to grow. We embraced those two-steps-forward, one-step-back moments, because without risk, there is no progress. This is why we made it free for young people to compete at our show. Encouraging the next generation ensured we never became just an “old lady” cake show!

As we reflect on these cherished memories, we remain hopeful for the future of cake shows. Thank you for sharing your stories and for being such an integral part of ours. Your love and memories have helped heal our hearts more than you can know.

With endless gratitude,

Capital Confectioners, That Takes the Cake!

An Important Announcement Regarding the Future of That Takes the Cake

It is with a heavy heart and deep reflection that we announce the closure of That Takes the Cake, the last major cake show in the United States. After 18 remarkable years of celebrating artistry, creativity, and community within the world of sugar arts, we regret to inform you that we will not be hosting a show in 2025.

This decision did not come easily, as this year marked what would have been our 19th annual event—a milestone we had eagerly anticipated. However, various challenges have made it increasingly difficult to continue.

Our journey toward the 2025 show began with enthusiasm but also a delayed start due to several tragedies within our community. The loss of cherished individuals and institutions—such as Make It Sweet, one of our most generous and long-standing sponsors, and Magda, whose steadfast support was invaluable—deeply impacted us all. Their absence is felt not only in our hearts but also in the operational foundation of the event.

In addition to these losses, the challenges of organizing a show of this scale have proven insurmountable. As many of you who have coordinated events know, a successful show requires the enthusiastic participation of vendors, competitors, and attendees alike. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the enthusiasm among these groups this year did not match the needs of the show. Without sufficient participation, sustaining the event is not feasible.

The broader landscape has also shifted dramatically. Since the onset of COVID-19, the event industry—particularly cake shows—has faced significant obstacles, mirroring the struggles of small businesses. Compounding this, our event often coincided with other major gatherings, creating competition that further impacted our ability to thrive.

We want to assure all participants, attendees, and supporters that your financial contributions have been carefully managed. Every registration, vendor fee, and sponsorship payment will be refunded in full within the next week. Refunds processed via PayPal will be returned directly to the PayPal account used for the transaction, rather than any specific credit or debit card associated with it.

While this marks the end of That Takes the Cake as an annual event, the memories, friendships, and creative achievements it has fostered will live on in the hearts of all who were part of this extraordinary community.

Thank you for 18 incredible years. Your passion, artistry, and support made That Takes the Cake more than just a show—it was a celebration of creativity and connection.

With deepest gratitude,

The Board of Directors
That Takes the Cake

It is with profound sadness—and a touch of disbelief—that we say goodbye to our dear friend and exceptionally talented Magda Porras-Painter. From the very first day she joined our cake show family, Magda enriched our lives. I can still see her now, her long, silky black ponytail bouncing as she walked in, exuding warmth, vitality, and just enough sass to make us smile.

Magda was far more than an efficient team member; she was our cheerleader, and the quiet force that held everything together. Her heart was as big as her talent, and she had a knack for making the impossible seem entirely doable—whether she was troubleshooting competition pieces with a competitor or simply lending a steady hand during the chaos of show prep. Her advice was always delivered with kindness, humor, and an uncanny ability to inspire confidence in those lucky enough to receive it.

Her dedication to our show and its members went beyond anything we could have hoped for. Magda was a rock in tough times, always showing up with calm assurance and an unshakable belief that we could handle anything—because she would help us do it. She wasn’t just part of our team or our friend; she was family in every sense of the word.

We’ll miss her endlessly: her infectious smile, her boundless energy, and even the way she’d roll her eyes at us when we were being especially ridiculous. Magda had a way of making all of us feel like we were part of something extraordinary, simply by being herself. While her absence leaves an unfillable void, her spirit will forever remain in the heart of our community, inspiring us to approach life with the same grace, humor, and passion she shared with us all.
