JRF Shearing and Sheep Co. JRF Shearing is an over 10 year shearing business that handles small sheep and goat farms. Trained by Penn State Extension of Bucks County through DVU.

Servicing the PA, DE, MD, and NJ areas. Thank you for checking out my services! I'm a 5+ year sheep shearer that covers a wide area. I go to the farms the big guys don't cover. With shearing, deworming, and foot trimming, make sure your wooly friends are ready for the upcoming summer! As a livestock science and management major, I can help with any health issues as well and for newer sheep farmers, I can assist in what ever you need. I raise Finn sheep and have a wide variety of colors. If interested in starting your own Finn flock or adding some friendliness to your flock, feel free to contact me about what is currently available.

My clients take the coolest pictures! Thank you, Loren! Fall shearing some gotland boys. Plenty of time left in the fall shearing schedule if you’re in need! Your sheep only need an inch of wool for warmth in the winter. Fall shearing helps keep the wool clean and adds to your wool stock 🐑 text/email for scheduling!

Trying to scroll through my phone to show people pictures of anything else other than sheep and wool is a whole process 😂 but I do love a good picture 😍

Fall shearing is getting scheduled! If I’ve talked to you recently and gave you a date, you’re good. If I haven’t talked to you since spring, please send me a reminder text or email! My brain is not fully functioning during shearing season and sometimes I mark people down for fall and other times I forget. I’ll be checking messages this weekend and getting back to everyone soon 🙂

Whenever you think the season is done, think again 🫣 I’m pleasantly surprised to still be shearing! Looks like I’ll be staying in shape for fall season. This weekend, I sheared the OLDEST sheep I’ve ever shorn. After shearing the angora goats, we moved onto the sheep. It was obvious they were old with their sagging skin and frosted eyes. It took a little longer than usual since old sheep can’t bend that well, their wool is brittle and hard to cut through and they were blind. I finally asked my new client how old they were and he told me around 18-19 years old! I was shook! So, they took the record for me. I don’t think I’ll ever have sheep that old to shear again. Pictured is the old sheep that are in surprisingly great shape!

This client is looking for replacements to add to the farm. If you’re offloading/selling any age, please let me know. Looking for low maintenance. I love my babydoll clients but I don’t think they would be a good fit for here. Small/medium open faced and legs would be the best for this farm. They will be given excellent care, as you can see!

Beach day! My favorite day of shearing season is shearing my way down to the beach, taking a dip in the ocean to wash the grime off and grabbing some pizza before heading home. Of course, brought my son along and my mom to help babysit. He had so much fun playing on Candy’s golf cart while I sheared alpacas 😍

Today marked my very first time shearing a 3 legged sheep. This little guy had a bone infection shortly after being born and his new, wonderful owners have accommodated to him completely, including a wheelchair to give him some relief. It was an odd experience shearing a sheep without the normal leg I put behind me but it was a fun challenge!

It’s getting HOT 🥵 now is the time that late calls come in and I have to break the news that they have to wait. Clients are scheduled out in January/February and there’s no line cutting in an area that I’ve already covered.

Here’s what to do with a heatwave while you wait for a shearer. Keep your sheep in a well ventilated, shaded area. Always keep fresh water around, especially in the shade where it can stay cool. If you have a run in shed, add fans. I have fans in my run in that will be turned on for the sheep to lay in front of. Your sheep may be hot but they’ll survive as long as you keep them shaded and give them good airflow.

This heat wave will only last a few days before it’s dropping back down again to cooler weather. We see this every spring. If you want to get ahead of it, contact a shearer in January! That gives you a guaranteed spot on the schedule and leaves room for negotiation on timing!

My oldest clients are in their mid teens 😳 these old gals are delicate and take a lot of patience since they don’t move like they once could. Their arthritic legs don’t bend very much and they’re not too comfortable sitting up. I just go with the flow for them. However they’re comfortable being shorn is how they get shorn, even if it takes a little longer than the average time. They get a helping hand up when they’re done so I know they’re not stuck where I left them. Their owner takes the absolute best care of them and it’s such a treat to know they’re still kicking every year.

Actually remembered before and after pictures, plus a bonus picture of the wool at one of my farms today. I guess my brain is functioning better in the cold 😂

Bonus* a cutesie picture of sheep posing with their wool 😍

Yesterday, had my fun Fox Chase Farms shearing demos and was too cold to take pictures. Can’t remember a time I’ve been absolutely freezing while shearing in April but I’ll take it over the heat! I move a lot faster when I’m not blinded by my own sweat 🥵 another week filled with shearing is done. Now to focus on getting to May!

Do you have wool you don’t want? Join the club! I finally have an outlet for wool that’s not just my garden. I’ve only ever needed one or two fleeces a year for my garden and I have more than one or two sheep 😬 Consider donating to Sisters of the Redeemer Valley Farm in Philly! The Sisters had someone come in to teach them how to process wool so they could make wool balls and other wool crafts but are always looking for more wool to add to their stash. If there’s enough interest, I may do a donation wool pool to bring up in a truck (or trailer, if there’s enough).

Beats throwing the wool out and it goes to a group that is absolutely thrilled about it. I gave them three fleeces today and they were so happy, it made my day 😌
