We’re unfortunately going to get some hay rained on tonight. We cut this field Friday afternoon and parts of it just haven’t dried down enough to get into bales safely. Some of the clover leaves and stem nodes are still really green in spots. You run the risk of bales heating up and at best molding and at worst spontaneously combusting when the hay isn’t dried properly. Since all of this hay will be sold, we can’t risk that!

We’ll see how right the weather guessers are in the morning and probably go across it with the tedder tomorrow or the next day. That will get all the hay up off the ground where the wind can blow through it better. It’s best to leave hay flat on the ground if there’s a chance it will get rained on because it will hold less moisture that way.

Rained on hay is disappointing, but not a crisis really. That’s the risk you run making hay in May.

Finished up milling the big beams from yesterday this morning, then skidded logs for hopefully the last of the cedar posts for this order. Got things tidied up around the mill to finish the day out.

Got a cedar tree for a post and beam order cut this morning in spite of three different broken saws. The ol’ Homelite Super XL finished the job.

Then spent the evening with the essentialcraftsman milling up a 22’ log for two beams for that same order. We quit when we knocked the carriage off the rails as it was getting dark. 😬

Looking forward to seeing what kind of content comes out of this evening’s work!!

For five days we’ve been losing lambs off and on without any clear evidence to what was taking them. The USDA Wildlife Services trapper came out today and was able to track down and euthanize the culprit. This is not the first cougar we’ve had kill lambs, and certainly won’t be the last. But we’re awful grateful for the public servant that’s responsive to our needs, and his commitment to resolving issues.
