Well, predators took the last of our chickens last night. Were officially chickenless for the first time in 3 years, and will have to start actually buying eggs again. We're NOT starting over; not while we're living where we are. It just hurts too much. 😔

Update: Hatching of batch 1 is finished! We got a 50% hatch rate - 8 chicks from 16 eggs. The family has already named them: Daisy, Nugget, Walnut, Cinnamon, Butter, Goldie, and two black ones we haven't named yet. Batch 2 (8 more) is in the incubator, and we have a broody hen (a black one, which may be the mother of the two black chicks) sitting on another 5. Lord willing, our flock will be back to normal relatively shortly.

Good news! We're up to 3 chicks hatched of 16 eggs so far, with several more shells cracking!

We're grieving today. We've lost 10 chickens to some kind of predator in the last week. And today, Raspberry killed Colonel Sanders.

Why does losing chickens hurt so bad?

We've lost 6 chickens to neighborhood dogs in the past few days. Except for the roosters, all of our favorites have been taken. RIP Blueberry, Cloud, Tiana, Sister, Popcorn, and Rose.

Straight up, I'm on a hunt. When I catch the dogs responsible, they WON'T be going home.
