Mama Hen’s Farmstand has expanded to include “Heidi & Clara’s Little Farmstand!” The kids’ stand will feature whatever they grow/harvest from the garden, along with trinkets and creations, and gently loved toys. There are big plans for beaded lizards and friendship bracelets. Tonight at their stand: hand picked chive bundles and blueberry bags. Come support our little Junior Farmers next time you’re in the neighborhood!

We’re taking a brief intermission from HENTRODUCTIONS today to announce something I’m very excited about… drumroll please… Mama Hen Farm will now be offering a weekly egg CSA share to make it just a bit more predictable and easy to get your farm fresh eggs. Just DM me or email [email protected] letting me know what date you’d like to start and what day of the week you prefer to pick up. Once we’ve confirmed, your subscription will last for 4 weeks or can be renewed. Simply drop by the stand each week and pick up a fresh dozen labeled and waiting for you. Thank you for continuing to support this micro farm as we get our feet planted and soil amended. I’m so excited to be taking this next step, and continue to be excited for what’s being built here at the farm.

This week, allow me hentroduce you to our flock’s top model starlet, Dahlia! Best known for her appearance in our “Dahlia loves iPhone” posts, Dahlia adores the spotlight. It’s hard to believe this little Pisces chick is not a Leo. Dahlia will seek you out, especially if she sees a phone in hand. Whether she just wants fame & notoriety, or she’s simply transfixed by the light reflecting off a camera lens, this sweet girl loves to get up close and personal as she strikes a pose. Dahlia is our second Barred Rock, sister to Stripey. Her extreme sociability and her light chest feathers set her apart from the flock. If you get a large medium brown egg in your carton, you may have gotten a Dahlia egg!

This week, allow me to introduce you to Stripey, one of our two sisters Barred Rock hens. Barred Rock’s are one color variety of the Plymouth Rock breed. They are a classic American heritage dual purpose bird, raised for meat and eggs. Here at Mama Hen’s, our Barred Rocks are resident layers, producing delicious large brown eggs. Stripey has a sweet and gentle temperament, is very curious, and is one of our friendliest birds. Thanks for tuning back in to get to know the flock!

I thought it might be fun to get to know the flock so I’ll be posting a series I’ve cheekily named “HENTRODUCTIONS”. This week, allow me to hentroduce you to Petal- our Silver Laced Wyandotte. Petal is one of our 1 year old hens from the Floral Flock of chicks we brought home from last Spring. Her breed is known for their steady and dependable egg production. If you get a large medium brown egg in your carton- you may have a Petal egg! Wyandottes are a cold-hardy bird with their robust size and their small, tight, rose combs which are much less prone to frost bite. What we love about Petal is her curiosity. When we’re in the coop, she’s always one of our birds who runs right over to us and closely observes us as we go about our chicken chores. Petal’s favorite flockmates are Dahlia and Stripey. In the photo of the above, Petal is seen striking hr best runway pose while foraging yummy bugs in the rain garden on a “free range Friday” field trip out of the chicken compound and into the spacious backyard.

The iris are blooming at the end of the drive and signaling that summer is indeed on its way! In some EGGCITING news from the stand, we’re now stocking both half dozen AND full dozen cartons. $4/ 1/2 dozen, $8/ dozen. Our eggs are unwashed with the natural protective bloom intact, making them counter safe for about a month. Our flock is fed the highest quality organic feed, and gets lots of snacks from the garden- good snacks = happy chickens = nutritious eggs! The stand is full to the brim these days so come on by and make a farmer’s day by supporting local small scale agriculture. Come find our stand at 14836 Highway 305 NE, Bainbridge Island, WA. Scenes from a spring stroll around the trail at Mama Hen Farm. Featuring salal blooms, salmonberry blooms, a newly discovered patch of stinging nettle (yum!), apple blossoms, a dusting of wild cherry blossoms, and fresh green on the alders. What an enchanting time of year! Last year, one of the first outdoor projects taken on was the construction of this trail through the wooded portion of the land. Using an old logging road construction technique, we piled up heaps of fallen branches and limbs to construct a raised path across the swampy bits of land without damning up the sheet flow. It’s such a treat that we don’t take for granted, to be able to go out and enjoy this walk each day.🌲🌸🌦️🌿🌷🐕🌱🪾
