Trying to make it a point to explore more of our own backyard this spring. So I headed out to the White Cliffs of Conoy—honestly, I forgot how quiet it is out there once you get down the trail.
It’s easy to forget we have a landscape that looks like this right here in Lancaster county.
If you haven’t made the trip out there yet, it’s a bit surreal—it feels like you’ve stepped onto another planet, or at least out of Pennsylvania for a while.
These 30-foot white cliffs are actually a piece of our local industrial history; they’re remnants from a limestone quarry that operated back in the 1800s.
If you’re planning a trip:
Access: Park at Koser Park in Bainbridge. It’s an easy, flat 1.5-mile walk (or bike ride) south on the Northwest River Trail.
The Vibe: The trail is paved and peaceful, but once you get to the cliffs, it’s all limestone and ruins. It's great for photography, but definitely wear sturdy shoes—there’s plenty of uneven ground and old remnants from the quarry days.
Look Up: Keep an eye out for bald eagles. They’re all over this stretch of the Susquehanna.
It’s a good reminder that you don't always need a long road trip to find something unique. Sometimes you just need to head down to the river.
Has anyone been out there recently? I’m curious if the Shocks Mill Bridge is still as busy with trains as it usually is.
