Many dairy farmers strive to have something growing on their fields throughout the year. Why❓ Vegetation holds nutrients and soil in place, instead of washing off the land during storms. No farmer wants to lose highly productive soil, and local streams and rivers are healthier when soil remains on the land where it belongs.
After harvesting a primary livestock🐄🐄 feed crop such as corn🌽, farmers often plant a variety of grasses or other vegetation—known as cover crops. Along with other soil health practices, cover crops improve soil quality, allow the soil to absorb more water, and as seen here at Meadow-Vista Dairy, LLC, the deep-penetrating roots cling onto the soil.

🐮 Cows can eat over 100 lbs. of feed a day. Each cow produces approximately 11 gallons of milk daily.
🐮 Cow comfort is extremely important. Many cows now wear a type of Fit Bit so that farmers can be sure they are getting the best possible care.
At Meadow-Vista Dairy, LLC in Lancaster the Risser family cares for over 800 cows each and every day. When you consider that every 10 cows support one job in the state, that's a lot of jobs that dairy farmers infuse into the local economy!
