OakMoon Farm

OakMoon Farm Health issues altered our direction while opening new horizons. Watch for updates in our photo album section. We no longer do those things.

Our little homestead OakMoon Farm produced farmstead cheese, offered goat/cow shares, whey-fed pork, free range eggs, goat breeding stock, classes, and English Shepherd family farm dogs. The updated version of OakMoon Farm is still evolving, with raising and working with our English Shepherd farm dogs being our main focus. In years gone by, before a health emergency helped us reorder our prioritie

s, we raised several breeds of goats, and made unique raw milk natural mold-ripened rustic aged cheeses and fresh cheese specialties. We were busy people, because in addition to our cheese products and breeding stock sales, we offered workshop sessions in beginning cheese making and basic goat husbandry several times per year.

I'm fully converted to the use of bubble wrap to start seeds for the garden. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing sustainable about plastic bubble wrap, and corrugated cardboard can also be used. I expect the cardboard would barely make it being kept quite wet for a few weeks, but would still be a more sustainable alternative. The bubble wrap can be saved to be used many times, so there's that.

The things that go on in a goat barn.

Olive is great-grandmother to young Butter. Nothing like a gentle spar after breakfast on a foggy morning.

This is what true baby goat love looks like. And maybe a little obsession in the mix (yes, yearling Bonnie is getting schooled in proper etiquette around the kids.)

Goat scene I wish I'd had the camera ready for? Great-GrandMaMa Olive gently sparring with tiny boys Butter and Egg. The little guys were going the whole fight dance on their back legs at their old gran, and she satisfyingly assumed the come-at-me pose with her head cocked and ears back before letting them give her head a baby knock. So sweet, and if I can I'll record it next time.

What we are: Grey heads navigating our elder and crone times of life with perspective and as much good humor as we can manage. We still keep a few goats, a flock of hens, a pack of collies and ourselves together most of the time.

What we are not anymore: Goat cheese makers. That ship has sailed, y'all.

After his undignified ride home in the Ingles bag, Ford will be BROC (big rooster on campus) for the rest of his days. Thanks, Christy-Lynn!

An Ode to Old Mr. White

(Rhetorical. Do not contact me offering roosters.)

Give me a rooster both bold and bright,
A rooster who crows in the dark of night,
A handsome bird of girth and might,
Give me a rooster like Old Mr. White.

Find me a rooster who will not fight,
A rooster who yields and does what's right,
Give me a rooster who lives his life,
As gentle and kindly as Old Mr. White.

Give me a rooster that's bold and bright,
That crows at dawn and NOT in the night,
A rooster who yields, is kindly and right,
Who thrills the hens but shows no fight.
I'll find me a rooster like Old Mr. White.

Note: this GoFundMe is for Margy Burton, a long-time goat friend. She fell and broke a hip and if you know how it is when a goat lady is laid up, you know the ship gets real. I don't know why there's no proper thumbnail with the link, but please take a look and help if you can.

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well. I’m reaching out to ask for support for this GoFundMe. This cause is important and whether you can donate or simply share the fundraiser, every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated. Here’s the link:

This is the routine, though I'm not usually around to be the photog. Noble and his halfsis Demi have a standing play date early each morning to run the woods, wrestle like pups, and generally work off some energy.

She looks pretty good for a 2018 hatched TSC hen, and still laying an egg per day. She's telling me to mind my own business! (No, she doesn't have a name, and apologies for my usual blurry photos.)
