We raise Pygora & Cashmere goats, Bluefaced Leicester Sheep & French Angora Little Hawk Farm is located west of Baldwin City, KS.

We have a small herd of Pygora & Cashmere goats, Bluefaced Leicester sheep, French Angora rabbits, a small flock of chickens and an assortment of loyal dogs and cats scattered around the barnyard. We started our farm out of the desire to spin and weave our own fiber, teach animal husbandry to our children and enhance our country life with some fun and loving animals. Our goal is to raise happy, healthy animals that produce luxurious fiber for hand spinning.

Last year I read that planting radishes with your squash plants helps keep the squash bugs away....I'll keep you posted.

This morning I continued working on updating my herd fleece records. Samples from Emilia, Astrid, Hazel, Savanah, Ginger, GW, & Clay were evaluated and put into their separate pages. This gives me a better understanding of each goat's fleece and if our breeding program is on point or if adjustments need to be made. These evaluation samples will be put into the book along with a woven cloth sample made from the fleece. Along with the hands on evaluations and samples, each goat has had it's fleece sample evaluated at the lab, and the lab results will also be put into the record book. I am really pleased and excited about the direction our herd is going and what each of them is producing!

Ginger has the most amazing cashmere fleece! Years ago I started my own personal fleece study from goats on our farm, and keeping records and working with each fleece. I realized this morning that I have some catching up to do before I send fleeces to the mill. Gingers dehaired cloud was heavenly to spin! There is more in the Etsy shop if anyone is interested?

This is a good reminder for those sending fleeces to a mill. Over the last 15 years I have worked with six different mills, and I built a relationship with each. Those relationships were built on trusting what they recommended, listening to what they are saying, and making the best choices with that information. Lots of mills bend over backwards to do everything to ask, but it's important to listen, too.

PSA to please trust your mill! Not all sheep are made for yarn. We try our very best but different mills have different equipment that are capable of producing very different things. This fleece came in very dirty with lots of VM and very inconsistent in length and quality, but has sentimental value. It was small so we muscled through. The downfall is, you pay on incoming weight. After excessive skirting, the number of times it has broken at the spinner, resulting in trash on the floor, and the man hours to babysit every step, the resulting yarn will yield only about 25-35-% of when it came in. Please please please trust your mill when we say that yarn is not the best intention for a fleece or if we suggest adding wool to certain blends. We really do mean well and are trying to save you money with a viable and valuable end product.

Any yes, we know another mill did it for you before. They likely had different equipment than we do! I highly recommend “Vanishing Fleece” by Clara Parkes. This book explains how the same fiber can come out very very different when sent to different mills. We promise we won’t be offended if you go back to the mill who did it for you before!
