We recently bought a horse that came to us with canker. It’s not common. Not many people are willing to try and fix it. Most recommend humane euthanasia before the feet fall apart. We’ve almost spent as much money on Tucker’s canker treatment as we spent on him. So far, Tucker has seen 4 farriers (ok, actually more if you count those that attended his debridement), he’s under the care of a local vet and a world renowned canker specialist. He’s taking oral medication twice a day, daily topical medication including hoof dressing and bandages, and he has to be stalled if there is a chance of rain. He does not stall well so we are having to give him additional medication for that! On a positive note, this is his worst foot and Dr Frank Reilly’s protocol is working. You can see that the swollen, soft, spongy growth is drying and coming out. We are hopeful because his thyroid test came back better than expected and he is on a much better diet so hopefully with this protocol he will be able to heal from the inside out and from the outside in! So far we have learned that any treatment involving moisture only makes canker worse and that thrush treatments aggravate canker.
