COWBOY TUFF CHEX
December 11, 2010 – August 25, 2026

The Texas Longhorn world has lost one of its giants.

Cowboy Tuff Chex was born December 11, 2010, bred and raised by Bob and Pam Loomis in Overbrook, Oklahoma. His pedigree brought together generations of some of the most important Butler genetics of their time, including Coach, VJ Tommie and Farlap Chex. What came from that mating would ultimately leave a mark on the breed few bulls ever have.

In 2017, Tuff sold at auction in Fort Worth for $165,000 to Richard and Jeanne Filip of Bentwood Ranch in Fayetteville, Texas. Bentwood became his home, and over the years he became far more than a famous Longhorn standing in a pasture. He became part of the community. People knew where he lived. They drove the roads around the ranch hoping to catch a glimpse of him, photograph him, or see the generations of cattle that followed him.

And there was no mistaking Cowboy Tuff Chex.

At 108.125 inches tip-to-tip, he became the Guinness World Record holder for the longest horn spread on a living bull. His 126.5 inches of total horn placed him among the most extraordinary horned bulls the breed has ever produced.

But records alone don't explain Cowboy Tuff Chex.

His greater legacy is what came after him.

His sons and daughters, and now their descendants, carried his influence into programs across the Longhorn breed. The numbers are remarkable: hundreds of his progeny reached the breed's major horn milestones, including animals exceeding 90 and even 100 inches. His offspring have generated millions of dollars in recorded sale-ring value.

For breeders, his name became one you looked for in a pedigree.

For the people who cared for him, he was something much more personal.

And for an entire breed, he became one of those rare animals that changed what people believed was possible.

Cowboy Tuff Chex will be remembered for the records, the tremendous horns, and the unmistakable presence that made people stop and look. But his real monument is already walking in pastures all across this country. We will miss seeing him enjoying his summer swimming adventures in the pond with nothing sticking out but his head. We joke that he is part duck. He always enjoyed walking leisurely over to the Can-Am to take a cube and get a head scratch. He was like the preppy guy in High School. He was confident, good-looking, with maybe a little arrogance, but still so sweet. He loved his cows and treated them with care. He knew his job and took it very seriously. Guns N Roses has a song. Paradise City. This song came on while I was finishing this post, and I had to go back and add it for those who do not know. "Take me down to Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty." You will be missed but never forgotten.

Cowboy Tuff Chex's influence did not end with his passing.

It lives on in the breed he helped change forever.

Rest well, Tuff. You earned your place in Longhorn history.

Who is Smith NRA?

Well, we’re the Smith family—Nathan, Amber, and Re*****on Smith. NRA simply comes from the first initials of our first names.

We are a family deeply rooted in faith, hard work, agriculture, and community service in the Town of Charlton, New York. Nathan is a fourth-generation farmer in Charlton, and we are proud to be raising Re*****on as the fifth generation to carry on that legacy.

Together, we own and operate Smith NRA Cattle Co., our family-owned ranch dedicated to raising quality Registered Texas Longhorn cattle. We started our ranch with a passion for preserving one of America’s most iconic breeds, and it reflects the values we believe in—integrity, stewardship, and tradition. Our philosophy, “We Measure Success By The Inch,” represents our commitment to producing exceptional cattle while honoring the heritage of the American West.

In addition to farming and ranching, we own and operate Nate’s Snow Plow Repair & Service LLC, where we’ve built a reputation for honest workmanship, dependable service, and unmatched expertise in snow and ice equipment. We proudly serve municipalities, contractors, and homeowners throughout New York’s Capital Region, specializing in Fisher and Western snow plow sales, service, repairs, and emergency support during winter storms.

Serving our community extends far beyond our businesses. Both Nathan and Amber are proud members of the Harmony Corners Fire Department, where we volunteer our time to help protect the residents of the Harmony Corners Fire District and surrounding communities. We are honored to be part of a department with a proud tradition of volunteer service dating back to 1926.

At the center of everything we do is family. We are proud to raise Re*****on with the same values that guide our lives—hard work, honesty, respect, and a willingness to help others. Whether we’re caring for our Longhorn herd, repairing snow plows during the height of winter, responding to emergency calls, or supporting local community events, we believe in giving back to the place we’re proud to call home.

Thank you for supporting our family, our businesses, and our commitment to serving our community.
