Had to take a final picture of this cover crop before its turned over. It is so lush and beautiful.This is grown over the late fall into the spring to help replenish the soil and prevent winter erosion. Soil health for the win!

Every day I let the ladies out to free range, they run right over to the cover crop to eat some fresh grass, clover, vetch and peas! Makes those egg yolks nice and orange! Happy healthy hens!

Our pasture raised Chicken has been restocked! Boneless breasts, thighs, wings, drumsticks, bones for soup stock and whole roasters available!
Perfect weather for prepping soup stock, we have a batch simmering as well!
My secret is to roast these meaty bones first for added richness.

While the frost killed all the other crops, seeing the fields green up from the cover crops is a welcoming site!
What are cover crops you ask?
Cover crops protect the soil from erosion, improve soil health by adding organic matter, and support biodiversity.
We use legumes, like clover, peas and vetch, which fix atmospheric nitrogen allowing it to be used by the next crops and greatly reducing the need for synthetic fertilizer. Brassicas, such as Daikon radishes, help reduce soil compaction. Grasses, such as winter rye, oats and triticale, help prevent erosion with their fibrous root systems and add organic matter back into the soil. Mustards can help alleviate pests in the soil. All of these help smother out w**ds as well. Many can be winter killed, meaning less work for you come spring (ex: peas, oats, radish). They can also be rolled/crimped, allowing a natural mulch to form to help alleviate w**d pressure, or tilled back into your soil to build up organic matter.
