Things got a lot quieter this last weekend.
The month of May had one last "f**k you" for me.
I had locked the goats in the barn for their dinner, to give moms a break from their children, and so I could let the chickens out without the goats eating all the chicken feed.
My husband and our kids had come out to help, and then he and I were discussing future projects when we heard a scream and my oldest came running towards us as fast as her little legs would go, with our rooster, HeiHei, racing after her.
I will put up with quite a lot when it comes to animals being animals, and yes, some roosters are over protective of their flock. However, when it comes to animals and my kids... I have a zero tolerance policy.
HeiHei broke off his attack when my husband ran at him to kick him, while I grabbed the kids and got them out of the pasture. Then hubby got his gun and sent HeiHei to his next life.
We aren't sure what provoked HeiHei to attack, when he had been so good and never attacked anyone previously. But whatever the reason, I've had enough roosters with Little-Man-Syndrome to not want to make my kids deal with that.
Don't worry, I still have over 25 chicks in my brooder, there are quite a few roosters in there. We'll probably keep two of the nicest ones (both Heavy's babies) over winter and make a final decision next spring.
