My great grandma's rose bush is blooming! (My mom had gotten a baby from her grandma and planted it in the flower beds when she and my dad got married, and took babies with when they moved, then I got a baby from her when my husband and I bought our home.)

Which means I am collecting the flower petals and drying them.

Why?

These roses smell so good, I really want to use them in a batch of soap!
Planning my first solo attempt at soapmaking tomorrow. (Rose petals will be saved for once I've successfully made a few batches of soap.)

Shaved the dogs yesterday.
Filled a gallon sized ziplock with the fur. I've read a lot about rabbit breeders using whatever was on hand to supplement their rabbit nests when mom doesn't pull enough fur for her babies, so this year I am saving everything.

Rabbit fur when they molt.
Cat and Goat fur when they shed.
Dog fur when we shave them.

Will the rabbits freak out smelling predators? Maybe, though it has worked for other people, I suppose it depends on the individual rabbit, but I think it is worth a shot.

We have 3 does due this month around the 17th.
Fluff (3rd litter)was bred to Kidu
Sobi (2nd litter)was bred to Pip
Fable (1st litter)was bred to Oscar
Stay tuned to see if the alternate fur works!

28 chicks left and, based on tail feathers, looks like at least 16 of them are roosters...

Including my little buff brahma chick from Clementine.

Not sure about the welsummers (they're feral and hide under the rest of the chicks so i can't get a good look at them) or the two black brahma spawn from Karen.

Fingers crossed the buff chick become a hen or a super sweet rooster.

Things got a lot quieter this last weekend.
The month of May had one last "f**k you" for me.

I had locked the goats in the barn for their dinner, to give moms a break from their children, and so I could let the chickens out without the goats eating all the chicken feed.
My husband and our kids had come out to help, and then he and I were discussing future projects when we heard a scream and my oldest came running towards us as fast as her little legs would go, with our rooster, HeiHei, racing after her.

I will put up with quite a lot when it comes to animals being animals, and yes, some roosters are over protective of their flock. However, when it comes to animals and my kids... I have a zero tolerance policy.

HeiHei broke off his attack when my husband ran at him to kick him, while I grabbed the kids and got them out of the pasture. Then hubby got his gun and sent HeiHei to his next life.

We aren't sure what provoked HeiHei to attack, when he had been so good and never attacked anyone previously. But whatever the reason, I've had enough roosters with Little-Man-Syndrome to not want to make my kids deal with that.

Don't worry, I still have over 25 chicks in my brooder, there are quite a few roosters in there. We'll probably keep two of the nicest ones (both Heavy's babies) over winter and make a final decision next spring.

Incase anyone was wondering how my rabbit skull cleaning project was going...

I clearly forgot to skin the heads... the skin and tissues have now dried to the heads. But the bugs took care of the eyes and interior.

Tomorrow I may add them to a bucket of water to rehydrate things and see how much I can pull off without vomiting 🤣.

Do I have any idea of what I'll be doing with these skulls once they're cleaned??

Nope, but I'll think of something one of these days... unless I forget... again.

Nimbus!

Just like her mom, sticking her tongue out for pictures.

Nimbus and her brother, Kelp, are my feral babies. Nimbus is getting better, but still runs away from me. I have to catch her in the tires if I want to give her some love.

Kelp only likes love if he is sleeping.

Bright side: All 3 harlequin kits are still alive!

However. The gender fairy is a complete dick.
All 3 harlequin babies have a p***s... and between Cinna and Bouncy only 3 kits were girls.

Now to choose one of the harlequins to replace Oscar... fingers crossed they grow out well and I can socialize them.

Feral little Nimbus, I swear she has her tongue out in nearly every picture I take of her.
