A Florida brewery developed biodegradable six pack rings made from leftover barley and wheat used in the brewing process 🌊

Designed as an alternative to traditional plastic six pack rings, this material is intended to remain strong enough for retail use while breaking down safely if it ends up in ocean or freshwater environments. Researchers and engineers involved in the project focused on balancing durability for everyday use with the ability to biodegrade naturally without harming marine life. Environmental groups have noted that plastic six pack rings have historically posed entanglement risks to marine animals, making biodegradable alternatives a meaningful area of innovation within sustainable packaging. Since its initial introduction, several larger beverage companies have adopted similar plant based ring designs, expanding the use of this kind of packaging more broadly. Experts note that while this innovation alone will not solve ocean plastic pollution, it represents a practical, scalable step toward reducing a specific and well documented source of marine debris.
