Well it's taken 5 days to go from a walker to a cane and bending is still an impossible task. So sadly we are ending our season early while I recoup after popping my si joint out again while harvesting tomatoes.

I am not one to let these bumps knock me back so we will be spending the rest of the year revamping things to accommodate my loosey goosey joints. Great things are planned for next spring.

This is a special picture for my youngest who is spending part of the summer in NJ.

Every year since she has been little she has asked me to grow 2 things especially for her: green beans and cantaloupe. And every year we have grown green beans and more green beans and more green beans. I swear there is no limit to the amount of green beans this girl can eat. In that sense she is just like her older sister who would ask for a can of green beans as a snack, and just sit there eating them out of the can.

Well this year I not only grew green beans but also cantaloupe. The green beans are not too happy I'm their new spot in the field but this little trial cantaloupe is mighty happy where it is planted. Currently there is 8 happy cantaloupe growing with a ton more flowers.

It might not look like much at the moment but fingers crossed in a few months we will have a few buckets of peanuts.

Back in NJ we would wait all year for the magical time when Jersey Sweet Corn would be available in the markets.

But since moving to Alabama I have had to do without or have I? After some research we found the variety that produces the white sweet corn and ordered up a pound of it or somewhere around 1500 seeds.

Yikes that's going to take site dedicated room to plant, lucky they grow well with potatoes. So we planted a many seeds as we could fit, we didn't get them all in the ground but we made a serious effort to. Especially with corn being wind pollinated the more the merrier, right.

Now we have a sea of corn seedlings next to our potatoes that if everything continues to line up should produce a great harvest of both corn and potatoes in July.

10 days ago we planted our asparagus and in a little bit we will be covering them up. This process will repeat until we are 4"s or so from the top. Giving planting of room for some nice strong roots.

Patience is a virtue that is wicked hard to learn.

Yesterday we planted our 1st asparagus bed which will provide us with 20 years of asparagus if everything goes right and I have the patience to wait at least 2 years if not 3 years before harvesting.

I am not a patient person. I like to have projects done the day I dream them up but sometimes that lack of patience causes me to miss the forest for the trees.

So now I have a bed to tend and nurture, slowly covering the growth for this 1st summer, and then watching it produce next year to feed the soil and its roots, while patiently waiting for it to nourish my family and friends. This sounds awfully like raising a child. You tend to them, nurture them, slow them down, allow them time to grow before watching them fly the nest with the confidence to become successful adults.

Enjoyed a break from the rain and cleaned up some weeds. At the end of a long day it's so nice to sit back and see the growth in our beds and feel the growth in our souls.

Much like these onions we start off very small and weak. If buried too deep our growth will be stunted but if planted too shallow we will topple over with the first storm.

As the days get longer the onions will grow more robust and start to bulb out. Just like us as we put more years behind us we grow stronger and more robust to easily handle the storms life throws at us.

But eventually the leaves on the onion will fall over and yellow letting us know it is time to harvest, our own time here on earth will eventually come to an end. And when it does we will leave behind tears and sweetness with the many layers of a life well lived.
