We are HIRING! We are looking for an experienced assistant manager to join our team full time from April 1st to November 30th. Do you (or someone you know) have a passion for organic farming and sustainability and love getting your hands dirty? Check out the job posting on our website (link in bio) for specific job requirements.

Our values at a glance, for those who don’t know us yet:

🥬 Sustainability: we strive to maintain production using no-till techniques as often as possible, in order to contribute to carbon sequestration and build on the rich biodiversity of our soil. We are all organic, all the time. Responsible, eco-centered stewardship of the land is central to our growing approach.

🥦 Community: we operate on a CSA-based farming model. Twice a week, folks come to the farm to pick up their veggies, take a peaceful walk, pick flowers, and mingle. We also sell to local food banks, and we partner with the Downeast Gleaning Initiative, in order to increase access to fresh organic food for folks in the community who are struggling with food insecurity.

🥕 Farmers helping farmers: we belong to an island-wide network of organic farmers and gardeners where we swap ideas, share equipment and labor, lend a hand as needed, and try to gather together for a potluck or fire at least once a season.

🧅 Teamwork (and fun!): we’re a strong, close-knit crew that works hard. We value efficiency, communication, innovation, and enthusiasm. Most days, we eat lunch together outside, and more often than not, it’s a home cooked meal made by one of us (we have a loose tradition of switching off cooking and baking for the crew when we have the time). On hot summer days, we often go for a dip in the ocean to cool off at lunchtime. Throughout the season we try to make time to gather for fun - whether it’s going to the lake for a picnic, having a cookout, or outdoor movie nights in the summertime.

🌻 If your values align with ours, reach out! We’d love to hear from you.

Just a few fragments of what early summer looks like here on the farm - harvesting together, cooking and eating REALLY good meals together, growing gorgeous scallions and radishes and onions, crimping and mowing down rye, garlic plants growing tall, flowers blooming, sun shining.

Rose stumbled upon these squash seedlings in our compost pile last week - how incredible that there’s enough heat generated by the compost to germinate a true heat-loving crop, even with nightly freezing temperatures! It’s amazing to see the heat of an active compost pile in the dead of winter in Maine - perhaps even more amazing to behold the determination of a seed to grow, even if it means a very short life.

These squash seedlings were snuffed out the next day by the storm that covered the farm in a thick, heavy layer of snow, but they serve as a reminder that the work we do here is generating LIFE! And that very soon spring will be upon us - seeds will be sprouting not just in our compost, but in the safe haven of our potting room, nurtured and watered daily: the first step of their season-long journey from our soil to your plate.

Summer CSA shares are still available! So if you’re already dreaming about squash and you don’t want to miss out, head over to our website at www.barharborfarm.net and sign up today.
