A piece of our history!

It's Karen the Curator, and it is time for this week's ! Today I want to highlight a surprising artifact from our collection. This is a metal barrel stencil from Plummer Brothers Sorghum Manufacturing in Bargersville donated by Bill Hougham. The stencil was used to mark the top of the barrels of sorghum. Similar to molasses which is made from sugar cane, sorghum syrup is made from the stalks and juices of the sorghum plant. It originated in ancient Africa before eventually spreading world-wide. The Plummer Brothers operated from around the 1880s to the early 1900s. Plummer Farms is still operational today although they no longer produce sorghum.

Mary ruthlessly drained the spice from many pumpkins and now has some brand new FALL themed goodies to offer this year!!! 🎃 come find us at the Little Red Barn market this Saturday for our Breads, Jams, Jellies, fruit butters, Marshmallows, Lamb and Beef!!! We'll be there with everything!

Mary and Levi spent the day educating Johnson county youth about agriculture! Levi took lambs to the fairgrounds for Ag days to teach 4th graders from all across the county and multiple schools about sheep production in Johnson County. Meanwhile Mary and Duane gave 3rd graders from our neighbors across the road at Union Elementary a tour of our farm and the many aspects of it! We enjoy teaching the youngest generation about the most important industry!
