โ€ขBreeders dock Blackhead Dorper sheep tails for three main reasons:

#1 - Hygiene and Health: It keeps their rear ends cleaner by preventing f***l buildup. This helps avoid "flystrike," a painful and potentially fatal condition where blowflies lay eggs in soiled wool or skin.

#2 - Historical Breed Standards: The Dorper was originally bred in the 1930s by crossing the Dorset Horn (which has a docked tail) with the fat-tailed Blackhead Persian. The goal was to produce a meat sheep without a large fat tail, leading to modern standards where the tail is shortened to promote an even fat distribution.

#3 - Management: A shorter tail makes it much easier for farmers to check the udder, spot signs of pregnancy, and monitor the general health of the ewe.
