We've been bringing asparagus to market for a few weeks now and it seemed time to answer a few questions!

Asparagus Q & A:

How often do you harvest the asparagus?
Nearly every day! When it's cold out we may go 36-48 hours between harvests. But when it's hot out we harvest TWICE a DAY!🥵

How long do your plants last?
Anywhere from 15-25 years. Our field is a gradient from dry sandy soil to wet heavy soil. In the sandy area we've had to replant already, but the other areas continue to produce great!🥳

How long does the season typically last?
It usually last 5-7 weeks. The plants will tell us when the season is over. The general rule is when the plant spears are pencil thin you should stop harvesting and let the plant fern out so that it is able to store adequate resources for next year.🌱

Memorial Day weekend is bringing all the good stuff 🌱🔥

Fire up the grill, toss on some asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and pretend you’re on a cooking show for a minute 😄

Then swing back for the real star of the weekend: rhubarb crumb cake. Sweet, tart, buttery, crumbly perfection. Honestly, it deserves its own holiday. 💁‍♀️

Cookouts, fresh spring veggies, and dessert that disappears before dinner’s over? Sounds like a pretty great weekend to us. 💛

We’ve got fresh asparagus and rhubarb waiting for your holiday plans!

We were absolutely spoiled Saturday night at Campo di Bella! 🌱✨

We had the honor of being the featured farmers for their farm-to-table dinner, and what an incredible evening it was. Wonderful people, beautiful conversation, and FIVE delicious courses highlighting local food — including our asparagus! 💛

The menu featured:
🥓 Prosciutto wrapped asparagus with lemon ricotta & balsamic glaze
🍚 Asparagus risotto
🍋 Chicken Limone with roasted asparagus
🧀 A beautiful cheese board with local cheeses, fresh & dried fruits, and nuts.
🍨 And profiteroles stuffed with ice cream & mascarpone whipped cream

Oh my goodness… every bite was amazing 😄 It's hard to pick a favorite but the asparagus risotto was sooooo good.😋

It’s such a special thing to see the food we grow transformed into something this beautiful and shared around a table with so many kind people. Huge thank you to everyone at Campo di Bella for such a memorable evening!

P.S. If there seem to be a few missing food photos… it’s because I got too excited and started eating before remembering to take pictures 😄😋

Whew, we've had some cooollllldddd nights in the Patch this past week! Cold nights mean frost protection in the strawberry field 🥶🍓💧

We’ve had irrigation running 7 of the last 9 nights to protect the blossoms from freezing temperatures. This is the most frost protection we've ever done 🤯! Cue Farmer Ed being TIRED🥱💤.

It seems backwards, but the processing of freezing water actual releases heat thereby keeping the blossoms temp from dropping below freezing. Without that protection, the cold air could damage the berries before they even have a chance to grow.

Farming this time of year means a lot of weather watching… and not a whole lot of sleep 🤪 But we're persevering and hopefully come mid-late June we'll have some beautiful berries for you to come pick in the Patch 😍🍓

The young girls are officially on the job! 🐔🥚

Our pullet eggs are now available at the Patch and at market.

Smaller eggs from younger hens… because everybody has to start somewhere 😄

What's so great about pullet eggs you ask? Well, you get 18 of them for the same price as a dozen! Another great thing...their yolks are firmer and their whites whip up stiffer! Pretty cool stuff!

Check them out today! We're open at the Patch 9-6pm daily plus we'll have them in stock at the Mount Horeb Farmers Market Thursdays and the Mineral Point Market Saturdays until they're no longer in training and are full time employees 🤣🐔

Hope to see you in the Patch or at market soon!

It’s Market Day in Mt. Horeb! 🌱🐔

What will we have at the stand today?
Honestly… Kathy’s not entirely sure 😄 (she’s off helping her sister in MN, so Farmer Ed is running the show this week!)

Here’s what we do know:
🥚 Eggs
🍯 Honey
🥒 Dilly beans
🌿 Rhubarb

And asparagus? 🤞
That all depends on how those cold nights treated us…

Stop out this afternoon, say hi to Farmer Ed, and see what made it to market!
Open from 3-6:30 @ 315 E Main St.

Welcome to the Asparagus Waiting Room… please take a seat 😄🌱

With a few cold nights in the forecast, things slow down a bit out in the patch.

Fun fact: asparagus growth is all about soil temperature — on warm days it can grow up to 6–7 inches in a single day, but when it’s cold, it pretty much hits the pause button.

We’re keeping a close eye on it and will let you know as soon as it’s ready to go!

🎄✨ Alright holiday bakers — what’s YOUR must-make treat this season?
Drop it in the comments! We love hearing what fills your kitchens this time of year. 🍪🎂🧁

And while you’re dreaming up those goodies…
We’ll be at the Mt. Horeb Winter Market this Saturday (9–12 PM in the church @ 315 E. Main St) with everything you need to whip, mix, drizzle, and snack your way through December:

🥚 Farm-fresh eggs — the holiday baking heroes, breakfast champions, and overall kitchen MVPs.
🍯 Local honey — for glaze, tea, charcuterie boards, or the sweetest little hostess gift.
🥒 Dilly beans — the ultimate holiday snacker fuel (they disappear faster than cookies… trust us).

Whether you're prepping for guests, baking for loved ones, or just craving something festive, swing by and stock up!

See you Saturday! 💚🐔
