Massachusetts is famous for our Eastern oysters—but do you know their history in New England?

Nutrient-dense, briny, and delicious, oysters have sustained coastal communities for generations. Wild populations supported a robust fishery through the early 20th century until overharvest, coastal development, and changing environmental conditions drove widespread decline.

Today, oyster aquaculture is a key part of our blue economy, and restoration efforts are helping to bring wild oyster beds back to our coastal waters.
