Something that I have thought long and hard about. Discussed between myself and my husband, and thought about some more...
I am cutting back on the amount of goats in my herd, and the amount I'm milking. Eventually, if business doesn't pick up to start paying for the girls again, I may sell off the whole herd.
Unfortunately, my client base for fresh raw milk is inconsistent and barely getting my herd by. There's no business loyalty anymore, as far as milk sales go, and I can't bring myself to put that much time and money into something that isn't paying for itself. I've always tried to keep my prices lower than everyone else to try to help out locals who want fresh milk without the high cost, but it's going unappreciated and unnoticed. I'm not out to get rich. I enjoy what I do, and it makes me happy knowing I'm helping out the community with milk from healthy, happy, pastured animals.
We will still be breeding, selling kids/yearlings/does, making soap etc as usual, but I will not have the amount of milk that I used to keep. I will still be milking 2 does, but milk sales will be by order and appointment only, as the milk we get from them will be going into cheese and soap. I will also still strive for having the best genetics and improving my herd, just on a smaller scale.
On that note, we aren't going away, just scaling back, for now.
I have a doe in milk, and a couple kids from this year I am looking to sell. $350 - $500 with registration, or papers to register depending on the goat. If anyone is interested, contact me to get more info and pricing.
