Ivy has shown us that she would much prefer to be a homestead milk goat rather than a show goat. So, unfortunately, Kalina is looking to place her this spring.

If you are looking for an easy to milk, sweet, registered Alpine please reach out! More info on our website. Link in comments.

Shearing day! Koselig took off his winter coat today, which weighed in at 6.5 lbs and filled two big grain bags. I used the goat clippers this year, which were much easier for me to manage than the big scary sheep shears. We both had a more enjoyable time than in years past.

He also got his annual vaccine and a hoof trim. The goats don’t recognize him anymore, so here’s hoping they accept him back into the herd before too long!

Considering we primarily breed Mini Saanens, would you be surprised to know that none of our babies are actually Mini Saanens this year? They’re just look-alikes! 😅

Ivy delivered nearly pure white Mini Alpine buck/doe twins on 4/7 sired by our cream colored Nigerian Dwarf, Mumford Meadows D Harry. (A good sign that he throws white kids since we will be using him to help produce Mini Saanens in the future, which must be white in order to conform to the breed standard!)

Hera gave Kalina her long wished for American Saanen doeling, sired by Vineyard View True Holo Holo, courtesy of Oak Hollow Livestock, on 4/12. Holo and Hera each have National Champions in their lineage, so this special little girl will be strutting her stuff in the show ring all summer long.

It’s been a great spring so far!

Folks are so generous when they hear “4-H”! Kalina decided that she’d like to try raising and showing chickens this year, so she took some time over the winter to research different breeds she might like to invest in for a foundation dual-purpose flock.

She narrowed it down to a few favorites and finally settled on one show flock of Dominiques and one homestead/4-H flock of Bielefelders. She communicated with the breeders and planned to pick up hatching eggs this weekend so that she could set them to hatch for school vacation week in April.

Well, both breeders were super welcoming and even included an extra dozen eggs each. One farmer wanted her to try their other favorite dual-purpose heritage breed, Chanteclers, and threw some of those in too. So somehow we now have over 60 hatching eggs and 3 breeds to incubate over the next few weeks. Wish us luck!

One benefit of milking through the winter: fresh afternoon snacks with a snowy view. Goat milk espresso latte with homemade garlic dill chèvre.

Both of our Mini Saanens are milking through without being bred this season, (the second year in a row for Moon), so we have a steady supply of milk throughout the year. Saanens are known for their will to milk and extended lactations, and our girls have certainly proven they carry those qualities.

Our friends Sara and Madison from came to visit tonight and took a peek inside our expecting does with an ultrasound machine. So exciting to see baby goats at this early stage! Ivy is 59/150 days along and Hera is 46/150. Can’t wait to meet you, little ones!
