“Life and Times of Minerva Ida Adams” will be presented by local historian Lucy Allen on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at seven o’clock. This program will be of general interest to adults and older youths who are interested in life in Barre in the mid-1800s and the palm leaf hat industry, as well as to those who are doll fanciers.
Minerva Ida Adams is a circa 1858 doll who came to live with a Barre girl, Agnes Eudora Dennis, before 1860. Minerva Ida Adams became well-known when a book, The Pantalette Doll, was written about her by prominent children’s author Patten Beard in 1931. For a number of years, Minerva Ida Adams was on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 1936, she returned to Barre and has “lived” at the Woods Memorial Library for the past 80 years. “The Life and Times of Minerva Ida Adams” will describe the doll, her journey through the past 158 years, and her “life” in Barre with her owner Agnes Eudora Dennis, whose father, Dexter Dennis, was a prominent citizen and palm leaf hat manufacturer.
