The benefits of no-till farming are evident on days like today. Preserving a layer of residue on the surface significantly reduces wind erosion. Furthermore, this practice enhances moisture retention and allows us to capture soil that would otherwise be lost.

We finished planting soybeans today and the corn planting was completed earlier last week. This is our second year of no tilling all of our crops and it saves a lot of fuel and time. With a little patience, no tilling with the addition of cover crops, works on all of our soil types. The fields that have been no tilled for 3 or more years really work well. We have a few fields that have not been tilled for over 10 years.

The wheat 🌾 we planted last Monday has sprouted nicely. On Thursday we installed some updated seed boots and started planting some no till corn on Friday. Now we wait for the rain to stop and warmer temperatures to continue the corn planting.

Recently, we undertook the retrieval of deer carcasses from our fields to prevent further instances of antlers becoming lodged in the tractor tires, given the high cost of repairing LSWs.

We went on a cover crop check today. The radishes and turnips are still growing and improving our soil health, quality, aggregation, and drainage this spring. The deer and turkeys have been enjoying feasting on them since harvest last fall. We will be no-tilling corn into this field in a few weeks.

It been a busy few days at the office hauling the corn 🌽 and wheat 🌾 babies to town. We are taking full advantage of the great weather to get our contracts filled. Thanks go to Paula for making delicious lunches to keep the machine going all day long. Beef, pork, fish and chicken were on the menu for the week.
