We would like to introduce the world to Merlin. He will become one of our working LGDs. He is very smart and comes from a working family. His line is a bit smaller than the lines we used to breed. He will hopefully be as agile as Lucy.

Adding him was a hard decision since it means we have to accept that Guinevere is getting old and that Elaine’s injury from last year is becoming debilitating. We were becoming fearful that Lucy would be left alone this winter. The farm is too big for one LGD 2-3 is about the perfect number for us. His addition also reaffirms that we will no longer breed LGDs on our farm.

We started weaning Danica’s litter of piglets. These little guys are out of registered Mangalitsa parents and any that leave the farm for breeding are also registered. Sire is pure of color blonde, named Gaston. Dam is a color combination sow (blonde x Swallowbelly), named Danica. We are located in Barryton Mi.

Oh barn chicken, what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive.

For reference “Barn Chicken” which is one of three chickens of the same name. Has moved to the barn and out of the chicken coop. She has been trying to hide her eggs in places the farm and LGDs cannot find them. This time she was trying to hide them in the garbage bag in the buggy. She got all tangled up. Thankfully for her the farmer found her before any damage occurred. She then played her egg on top of the hay bale we use to feed barn calves.

We are debating slowly changing our egg laying flock to one dual purpose breed. If we do this there will then be a debate about breed currently Ryan is leaning towards the Bresse. But others are an option.

I think switching to one breed makes the most sense for the following reasons:
1). We do not sell a lot of eggs especially in the winter. We have dropped the price to $4/dz which is a loss since it costs us over $5/dz to produce them. I have about 40dz eggs here right now. Which seems to be the normal every couple of weeks after the summer lake people go home.
2). Having a singular breed allows us to sell hatching eggs as well as day old chicks. Which creates a new income stream for the laying hens.
3). Our farm is based on heritage breeds that have world renowned meat, Bresse are those.

Downsides:
1). We will produce less eggs. Winter production with any of the heritage breeds might be significantly lower than current state.
2). We will have a singular color of egg.
3). Our pasture will be full of one color of chicken.
4). As a heritage breed the birds are going to take 5 -6 months to grow. We likely will not sell many as table birds and will still need to run either a Cornish or Ranger bird for the bulk of our meat chickens.
