Good morning, everybody! Hope your weekend went well and that you stayed warm. This month's homestead projects will be potato sprouting and composting. Today, we will focus on sprouting potatoes for planting
Did you know that you don't have to go out and pay for starter potatoes to grow potatoes in your garden? Many plants can be regenerated, provided the process is correct and that they haven't been sprayed with a sprout inhibitor. Many conventional produce items are treated, so that they don't sprout in the store...sweet potatoes, garlic, and ginger root, to name a few. Not all, but many, although I've never had a problem with potatoes sprouting once I got them home from the store.
And that's kind of the idea for sprouting planting potatoes, The potatoes should be started about 6 weeks before you intend to plant them. Mamaw insists that February 14th is planting time in the Midsouth. Seems a little cool to me, but she grew up farming, so she should know. She's 94, so the experience factor is there, which puts me about a week behind schedule.
Figure the number of plants you want. I have a 4'x4' box, so I will be striving for 6 plants. Choose potatoes that have as many "eyes" as the number of plants you desire. Then choose another potato or two, in case on eye is a dud.
Place in a cardboard box or paper bag and put in a dark, dry space, such as under a bed, pantry, or seldom used closet. Leave there for 6 weeks. That's it until planting time! We'll check back on these babies next week.
NOTE: Do not use a plastic box. The container must be able to "breathe". Oh! and keep out of reach of children and pets.
