This is very well written. In my opinion having your sheep graded is the most important thing you can do for your flock.

🐑 Why is grading so important for the Valais Blacknose?

Because grading shouldn't be easy.

As the Valais Blacknose continues to develop here in the United States, we believe maintaining a strong, consistent breed standard is incredibly important.

Not every sheep should receive the highest grade simply because it's cute, fluffy or expensive.

That's where qualified, knowledgeable graders matter.

A good grader understands the breed standard and evaluates the whole animal—structure, movement, markings, fleece, breed character and the details that separate a good Valais from an exceptional one.

And sometimes that means hearing things about your own sheep that you don't necessarily want to hear.

That's okay.

Grading isn't supposed to make breeders feel good. It's supposed to give us an honest evaluation that helps protect and improve the breed.

If standards become too loose, eventually the breed begins to change.

We WANT it to be difficult to earn those top grades.

We WANT breeders—including ourselves—to have something to continually work toward.

And we want grading performed by people with the experience and knowledge to apply those standards consistently.

A lower grade doesn't mean an animal has no value. It gives a breeder information.

What needs improved?
What genetics should we bring in?
What traits should we protect?
And what shouldn't we continue reproducing?

That's how a breed moves forward.

We're still building our own program, and we certainly don't expect every sheep we produce to be perfect. But we'd rather have an honest, difficult standard that pushes all of us to produce better animals than lower the bar just so more sheep can clear it.

The Valais Blacknose deserves that.

Protect the standard. Respect the grading. Keep improving the breed. 🐑❤️
