Before VS After 🦋 🐛 As you probably know, nature doesn't really wait for any of us to hit record or snap a shot … We'd specifically been watching this little one earlier in the season, checking in, documenting the fast magic of its chrysalis days, and then one morning, it was gone. Hatched and flown before we ever caught the moment.

Sooo this isn't quite the before/after we set out to show you. But we've got footage from years past of others at this exact same stage, (like the photo on the right) right on the edge of emergence, and it's a beautiful stand-in for what this one almost certainly looked like just a day or so before it took off into the world.

Not the story we planned to tell, but still the same story: a monarch, doing exactly what monarchs do, whether we're watching or not. 🧡

This fall we're testing many new flower varieties for the high tunnel… Chasing one BIG question: how do we stretch our blooms further?

Not just a few golden months of color, but as much of the year as this land will give us. We’re talking many many more months than we’ve been getting.

> Right now that means cold stratifying our newest seeds. That basically means breaking their natural dormancy and triggering future growth…

How? We do that by dampening them, tucking them into the fridge, and letting them rest there for 1-2 weeks to break their dormancy before we put them in soil when the temps cool off out here just a tad… We’re hoping we got the timing right 👀

It's a slow kind of magic trick that gives us blooms sooner and more reliably than it otherwise would the more natural way.

Every trial teaches us something new about our unique soil, our seasons, and our little corner of Basehor Kansas out here… Knowledge that takes years to earn and a lifetime to keep learning.

We’ll be trying many varieties, not just for the field, but for other spots of the property too, with plans of naturalizing many, to increase the abundance of everything here as time goes on.

We're always building a farm that gets wiser every single year 😉🌼 .. it’s a long game.

Pink-spotted sphinx moth found our moon flowers! Nighttime pollinators and blooms are fascinating, to say the least.

While the farm sleeps, they're out here doing the quiet work that most don’t see.

On another note, these blooms smell so much like an Easter Lilly. Obsessed. 🤌🏼 ✨

Swallowtails are in the gardens and out across the field! No spray, no herbicides, no pesticides, no chemicals / poison means they can actually stay and raise a generation here instead of just passing through (or passing away). 🦋

We 💛 Pollinators!

They’ve flattened a bed or two chasing, hunting, and rolling around, and we’ve forgiven them pretty much every time. (but… maybe once or twice sprayed them with the hose…)

This land is theirs as much as ours. We love them the same way we love Terabithia. Completely, mess and all. 🐱

Clematis is putting on an absolute show right now… We keep walking past and just… stopping.

There’s a version of a fence up front in the future, draped in her, greeting everyone who pulls up the drive.

That’s the backdrop we’re dreaming up and thinking of 🤍 for now, we continue testing, construction and development, and figuring out the best that’ll evolve as the years go on.

What a summer it's been out here!

The field came in fuller than we hoped. Rows of blooms opening a little wider every morning, bees working the beds before the heat set in, color spilling out further than we planned for. Golden hour hits this place a certain way... Long light across the grass, petals lit from behind. We spent the whole season watching it really start to turn into something special. 🦋

Some days are planned around a mother’s love for the daughter she lost too soon, and the ache that never really leaves, only learns how to breathe. 🕊️…

Grief doesn’t just live in the mind. It lives in the hands, the ones that ache to hold, to touch, to do something, anything, with the love that has nowhere left to go. So when this mother came to us to honor her baby girl, we got to work.

She asked for purple & pink, her daughter’s favorite colors, and we made it our mission to fit her vision with everything the season could give us.

We didn’t hand her a finished arrangement. We handed her a bucket of blooms, straight from the field, and let her build it herself. Grief deserves hands, not just eyes. Because love like that isn’t something you just consume, it’s something you create.

We can only imagine her daughter looking down today, smiling at every purple and pink stem her mama and loved ones placed with their own two hands.

What an honor it was for Terabithia to be even a small part of that afternoon, and to still make this happen as promised earlier this season, despite the hiccups and early close of 2026.

We’re honored to serve others, and to be a part of their life, in all stages. 🙏

This connection was made possible thanks to Cheryl Doyle, & Andy, and their business Basehor Nutrition who have such a gift for bringing people together with our buckets of flowers to arrange themselves. We’re grateful for hearts like theirs.

PS, we’re closed through the rest of 2026 while we build something even greater, this was planned before that, and we were so glad we could still show up for them.

Follow along for more real, heartfelt stories like this one. Flowers aren’t just something pretty. They’re there for you in every season of life. 🦋
