Update: both babies have found great homes!

✨ALLI AND EINSTEIN✨

These two sweet babies will be ready for their forever homes mid June! Alli(gray tabby) has found a great home for when she’s ready but Einstein(black but may actually be dark gray) is still looking for a farm to hunt on or a lap to nap on! His signature fluffy(and sometimes kind of hectic) hairdo makes him quite the character and He’s a sweet but kind of reserved guy that really loves to cuddle once he’s comfortable! He will likely have bright green eyes like his mama. He will have deworming and proof of neuter schedule must be provided prior to adoption. He should excel indoors or outdoors. If you’d like to be Einstein’s forever family please message me directly!

It’s chick season… and everyone wants pullets. Trust me, SAME!

But here’s the honest truth about why most backyard/local breeders don’t offer sexed chicks:

Sexing day-old chicks is not as simple as it sounds. True vent sexing requires specialized training and experience, and even then it comes with risks - done incorrectly, it can seriously injure or even kill a chick. That’s not a risk most small, ethical breeders are willing to take. Even when chicks are sexed, it’s important to know that vent sexing is not 100% accurate. Mistakes happen, even with professionals. Just look at all the local chicken groups asking if their TSC chick is a rooster🫣

There’s also feather sexing, but this only works for specific breeds and crosses (fast feathering + slow feathering), and only between 1-3 days old. Miss that window, or use it on the wrong breed, and it’s simply not accurate.

The exception is autosexing or sex-linked breeds, where males and females hatch with distinct visible characteristics (Welsummers, Legbars, Barred Rocks, Zombies). There is also DNA sexing, but it comes with added cost per chick & most people aren’t willing to pay the higher price that comes with it. On top of that, collecting and submitting samples for large numbers of chicks just isn’t practical for most small backyard breeders.

And here’s the bigger picture… Large commercial hatcheries are able to offer “sexed pullets” because they process chicks at a massive scale, but that often comes with the harsh reality that day-old cockerels are routinely culled (killed) because they aren’t profitable.

So when you support a local breeder, you’re supporting a more ethical, small-scale approach to poultry - one that values every chick.🤍 not to mention our chicks, even the roosters, carry genes that create those beautiful colored egg layers that everyone loves!

💕MEET FORREST💕

As the little bitties keep making their way out of incubation, I had the perfect “opportunity” if you will, to address an occasional issue of hatching: splay leg

What is it:
A day-old chick with splayed legs (spraddle leg) has legs that spread sideways, preventing it from standing. This is common and highly treatable if caught early

How it’s treated:
Splay leg is often treated using "hobbles" made from vet wrap, bandaids, or tape to hold legs directly under the body. Immediate action is necessary for a full recovery but if caught and corrected in time, chicks usually make a full recovery.

Forrest is a multi-generational olive egger and is now going to be one of our permanent residents here due to her current special needs💕

The babies are in lockdown! What does this mean? It means that in 2-3 days we will have chicks!

When we hatch different species of chickens, the netting keeps specific breeds confined together until they’re dry and ready to come out of incubation for sorting.

Interested in day old chicks? Message us to get added to our hatching notification list! We will have copper maran, F1 Olive eggers as well as some olive back crosses available!

UPDATE: she is home! 💜

If anyone in the Martinsville area near Old Chatham Rd sees our little “Flower” please reach out! She is approximately a year old, black medium hair with little white hairs throughout and a small patch of white hairs on her chest. She is extremely friendly! She is primarily an outdoor cat(who occasionally likes to try to sneak inside). We have not seen her for going on 3 days and it’s very unlike her as she is usually the first to greet us in the morning and evening. She is the solid black cat pictured(her brother Felix has the white whiskers)
