Potential for Snow! While it’s likely we won’t see any there is the possibility of black ice where wet weather springs run off onto the road. Please be careful driving and stay warm!
Here is my projected snowfall map for the incoming Northwest Flow/Upper Level Low that will move through WNC beginning this evening (Sunday) and last through Tuesday morning. Isolated high elevation locations could see over a foot of snowfall from this, while valley locations around Asheville & Waynesville only see a dusting to 1". Timing: Rain looks to arrive later this afternoon with a strong cold front around 4-5pm with locations above 3500' quickly switching to wintry precipitation. As the night progresses, strong snow bands pushed by high winds will break containment from the mountains, and snow will begin for many mainly north of I-40. My best guess for this occurring around the Asheville and Weaverville areas would be 10pm-Midnight. This flow will persist through the morning with some clearing around noon.
Then focus turns to the Upper Level Low that will slam into the mountains around 2-3pm on Monday. This will bring a more widespread chance for snow, and is when I believe flurries could even reach out of the mountains and into the Piedmont. Some uncertainty still remains will much the Upper Level Low affects WNC.
Winds: As the front moves through later this afternoon winds will really start to gust around WNC. Winds will gust over 50mph above 3500' and we could see isolated gusts to 40mph below that.
Road Conditions: Roads above 3500' will quickly become snow covered later this evening as heavy snow moves through. Some roadways below that will likely be affected as well especially if your location is within 15 or so miles of the NC/TN border. As the Upper Level Low moves through Monday afternoon, I could see a few roads even around Asheville become slick. I'll have a better idea once I can see the swath of moisture approaching on radar from the ULL.
Power Outages & Cold Temps: Power could go out for some due to high wind gusts through Tuesday AM. Have a plan in place if that occurs for your location! Tuesdays high temperature might not even make it above freezing. We will not have large amounts of snowfall in highly populated areas, so power should return relatively quick, but it would be wise to charge up devices, have water to flush toilets, and prepare and alternate source of heat if necessary.
Be safe, and check back shortly for a video updated and possible even a live Q&A later this afternoon!
