🐝 Where’s the Bee?

That depends on the weather! Over the next week here’s what the 40,000-60,000 bees in each hive will be up to:

☀️ Warm, sunny days: Around half of the bees will be out gathering nectar, pollen, water, and propolis, so the hive isn’t as full and the bees tend to be pretty easygoing. These are the best days to go into the hives.

☁️ Cloudy but dry: The bees still work, just not quite as hard. More of them stay home, so the hive is busier.

🌦️ On-and-off showers: As soon as the rain stops, they’re out the door, and when another shower rolls through, they’re right back inside. If you need to check hives you need to sneak in there when there is a break.

🌧️ Steady rain: Almost all of the bees are stuck home and they aren’t happy about it. They’re ripening nectar into honey, feeding brood, building comb, and cleaning. You do not want to open this hive- they will light you up!

This is the only hive not named after a color—my brother should feel honored! When you run out of woodenware, you use what you’ve got. This pic is from early summer, but today the Sheriff Joe Graff hive is booming and has already produced 75 pounds of honey. It’s not surprising that this hive would be orderly and super productive!

Sort of like bee-ing at the beach! It was definitely hot enough and the buzzing of the bees almost sounded like the ocean. Just missing a margarita and beach chair☀️

Yesterday I got a call to help out some bees that had picked a less-than-ideal spot for their hive.

The best part? Tyler came to help! I think this is only the second or third time he’s ever put on the bee suit. The bees were relocated, nobody got stung, and Tyler actually thought it was pretty cool. Not cool enough to crack open a full-blown hive tho… yet! 🐝😄

Nothing like spotting a swarm in the apiary on the way out for golf! 🐝⛳️

No time to suit up, so I just pulled my hood tight and hoped for the best. Swarms are usually pretty gentle, but I still don’t enjoy having bees get stuck in my hair!

Opie and his new baby brother would like to remind you to leave the dandelions for the bees! They are among the first plants to bloom in the spring, providing a valuable food source for pollinators. They offer both nectar and pollen, which are essential for pollinators' survival and reproduction.

(We still can’t agree on a name for this little pipsqueak of a pup! Any suggestions??)
