Weekend update (one day late). With last weekend’s rain and Memorial Day on Monday, we at Twin Maple Farms had a short week. Tuesday, the ground was still too wet to “work”, but by late afternoon, we were able to transplant the current planting of cole crops, lettuce and onions. Wednesday, we were able to get back in the field planting soybeans. Good news, we finished planting soybeans Saturday. So now we are caught up with planting everything other than our weekly plantings of sweet corn, string beans, red beets, cabbage, etc. We were also able to start cultivating potatoes. We “hilled” the first potatoes. They are looking good. Yesterday we loaded a trailer of last year’s soybeans out of the bin. It’s ironic that we just finished planting soybeans and we still have last year’s crop still in the bin. We have to get that bin empty to make room because the wheat crop will soon have to go in there. Until next week, we at Twin Maple Farms want you to stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. Wild weather week here at Twin Maple Farms. Three days with temperatures in the 90’s, followed by four days in the 50’s. With rain yesterday and last night. In 24 hours, we received about .9 inches of rain. This was good because the slow rain allowed everything to soak in the ground where it is needed. We kept busy this week trying to get as much done as possible. Monday, we picked up our pepper, eggplant, and tomato plants from Buzas' Greenhouse and Farm and transplanted the peppers that morning. In the afternoon we started planting soybeans. Tuesday, the boys transplanted the eggplant along with the cantaloupe, cucumbers, and zucchini that we started here at the farm. During Wednesday’s rain (less than ¼ inch) we were able to transplant and stake the tomatoes in the high tunnel. Friday was dry enough to get back to planting soybeans. As expected, those 90 degree days pushed everything we had planted here at Twin Maple Farms. We have another warm week coming, so I think we will see more rapid growth. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. The big news at Twin Maple Farms this week, we finished planting potatoes. With that job done, there are many more waiting for us to do. So, we started working ground and laid mulch for peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, etc. We also worked ground and started planting soybeans. The prediction for this week is warm. That should push the sweet corn. In reference to last week’s update, we do read the comments. Congratulations to Patty and Wayne, that was Arlan on the left and Lee on the right and fyi, the dog’s name was Queenie. Earl and Rosa had five son’s (Gerald, Robert, Ray, Lee, and Arlan) and one daughter (Mae). There was also a comment that we have no stones in our field. If you ask anyone who has worked on our potato harvester they will tell you we have plenty stones. Last year we purchased a stone eliminator. This machine temporarily buries stones under the wheel tracks during the current year’s potato crop. Finally, Tuesday is Election Day. Remember, don’t complain about politicians if you don’t vote. Until next week we at Twin Maple Farms want you to stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. First, we at Twin Maple Farms hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day, especially the mothers. Another busy spring week here at the farm. Monday morning, we planted the next plantings of sweet corn and snap beans. By planting each week, we can harvest fresh produce throughout the summer. Monday afternoon and Tuesday were spent planting potatoes, but Wednesday’s rain had us inside cutting the rest of the seed potatoes. By Friday the ground was dry enough to start planting potatoes again. Then Saturday, with more showers, we were back inside doing some needed maintenance on the potato planter. We are very concerned with soil conditions when planting potatoes because we move a lot of ground in our planting operation and if soil moisture isn’t near perfect, nothing works right. If the weather cooperates, it should take Twin Maple Farms two days to finish planting potatoes. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. Typical busy week for the last of April here at Twin Maple Farm. Seeded more flats to be transplanted. Transplanted cole crops and the next planting of onion sets. The biggest accomplishment was finishing plowing and park the plows until next spring. The boys were busy cutting seed potatoes and preparing ground to plant potatoes. Plans are to start planting the more potatoes this week. So far, we’ve had adequate moisture, but as you can see in the photos, the corn doesn’t like these cool temperatures. Hopefully, this week’s predicted warm temperatures will perk them up. The weatherman’s predicted rain Wednesday could slightly delay potato planting. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. Here I go again, starting with this crazy Pennsylvania weather. First two nights here at Twin Maple Farms, it was cold (I heard as low as 19 degrees). As you can see in the photos, the plants weren’t hurt too bad. Tuesday and Wednesday it warmed to the 70’s. Then yesterday, cold rain. More onions, lettuce, and tomatoes were ready to transplant, but we waited until after Tuesday’s freezing temperatures to plant them. With the prediction of Saturday’s rain, I planted the next batches of red beets and sweet corn (white, yellow, and bicolor). The beginning of the week, the ground was getting dry and hard and wearing the plow shares too fast. So, I stopped plowing and waited for yesterday’s rain to soften the ground. Speaking of plowing, there are basically three theories in tillage. No-till, minimum-till, and conventional. No-till is planting without tillage. This takes less passes across the field and can help prevent erosion in hilly fields, but this method requires more herbicides and expensive, specialized equipment. Minimum-till can be strip-till (only disturb a narrow strip of ground where the seed is planted) or chisel plow. These also need more herbicides and to a certain extent, specialized equipment. Here at Twin Maple Farms, we practice conventional tillage. One reason is because we always did it that way (not a good reason). Our fields are very flat, so we don’t have to worry much about erosion. Potatoes require loose ground which moldboard plowing provides. The plastic mulch we use for vegetables also needs loose soil. For various reasons I like to cultivate, and it’s very difficult to cultivate in a non-conventional system. Finally, conventional ground warms faster, therefore giving seeds a faster start. Sorry, last week I forgot to mention we are sold out of potatoes and cabbage. Both are planted and should be ready in July. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. SWEET CORN IS UP! FIRST POTATOES ARE PLANTED! How about this weather. Upper 80 degrees and dry this week. Now (Sunday) a much-needed rain with predictions of the freezing temperatures next two nights and another warmup by the end of the week. Like I often say, "It's all part of the game." The freezing temperatures shouldn’t hurt us, but I am concerned with local farmers who have fruit that is currently blooming. With this week’s warm weather, we wanted to get as much done as possible. Even with us waking up Monday morning to a truckload of seed potatoes from Maine waiting to be unloaded, we accomplished just about everything we wanted. Half of our onions (over 4500) also showed up Monday and were transplanted that afternoon. Tuesday, we transplanted lettuce, cabbage broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, and kale. Our biggest news for the week happened Thursday, when we cut and planted our first potatoes. This week we also laid plastic mulch in the high tunnels in preparation of hopefully planting tomatoes after the upcoming cold nights. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. NEWS FLASH. Twin Maple Farms’ first sweet corn is in the ground. We have been very busy all week and got a lot accomplished. Strawberry plants have arrived, been planted, and are growing very well. The boys cleaned, power washed and disinfected the potato storage in preparation for this year’s seed while I kept plowing. With the prediction of warm weather next week, we want to get as much in the ground as we can plant. So, we worked ground, made rows and laid plastic mulch. Plans for next week include transplant onions, lettuce, and cole crops and seed red beets and string beans. We hope that warm weather includes some rain. As I walked around Twin Maple Farms today, I was happy to see the radishes and peas are coming up. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. We at Twin Maple Farms hope everyone had a Happy Easter. This week we finally got out to “play” in the dirt. We got three different mold board plows out of the cobwebs and in the field. Between all our other work, we were able to plow around 80 acres this week. We also rototilled some ground and planted radishes, carrots, lettuce, and sugar peas. Steve was also busy cleaning and disinfecting the spouting for this year’s strawberry crop. Berry plants should arrive this week ready to be planted. Until next week, stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Weekend update. It’s officially spring, but it’s also March. So, it’s warm one day cold another with rain mixed in. Here at Twin Maple Farms, I always considered the first field job of spring is top dressing wheat. This is where we put fertilizer on wheat just like you fertilize your lawn, however in the same pass, we also apply clover seed. This clover will germinate then grow after the wheat is harvested. This serves as a cover crop adding nitrogen and organic matter to the soil. This will be plowed next spring. Thursday was a nice warm day to accomplish this job. Then Friday and Saturday nights were below freezing so we had to add heat to the germination high tunnel to protect our transplants. The other two high tunnels were being flooded. Flooding these two tunnels flushes all the salts from the soil. These salts can stunt tomato plants this summer. Mother Nature usually does this with rain, but the tunnel’s roof doesn’t allow this to happen. Finally, if you are making mashed potatoes or coleslaw for your Easter dinner, we still have a supply of potatoes and cabbage here at the Twin Maple Farms stand. Until next week, stay safe. healthy, and happy.
