BAAAAA! Happy National Goat Day!

Today we are celebrating the true G.O.A.T.s of the trail! Most people think of goats mostly as farm animals, beloved for their delicious cheese and nutritious milk, but they are also the ultimate sidekick for outdoor adventures.
Here is why these incredible animals deserve all the love on :

• Lightweight Footprint: Their small, soft hooves cause far less trail erosion than heavy horses or mules. If you want to leave no trace, you couldn’t ask for a better pack animal

• Surefootedness: Goats effortlessly hop over deadfall and navigate steep, rocky terrain that might stymie a traditional pack animal

• Built-In Backpacks: A conditioned adult pack goat can comfortably haul 20% to 25% of its body weight in gear.

• Zero Feed to Pack: As native foragers, they graze happily on the go, eliminating the need to carry heavy feed.

They are also forest health superheroes!
When goats hit the trail, they act as nature’s land managers. By selectively eating invasive weeds, overgrown brush, and flammable ladder fuels, they actively help prevent catastrophic wildfires and reduce the need for toxic chemical herbicides. Even better, their stepping hooves naturally aerate the ground while their manure fertilizes the soil, allowing native plants to thrive.

But wait, there’s more: Did you know that goats are naturally social animals and bond to their owners? That means you don’t have to look for a hitching post when you are engaged in a multi-day adventure with your pack goats.

Are you planning a goat packing trip on our forests--or any national forest--this year?
Have you done it in the past?

Have a couple doelings ready to be weaned and to move on to their new home(s). From a set of triplets. 1/2 Oberhasli, 3/8 Kiko, 1/8 Nubian. They should make excellent family milkers, I have owned and milked their mother, grand dam and great-grand dam. All three were solid 1 ½ gallons a day milkers. Dam was dna Casein tested as A/B.
The buck is unregistered from Play Rite Oberhasli lines. Clean tested herd (tested yearly).

Would make a package deal if you take interested both. Panhandle of Nebraska (also have a couple bbq prospects)

Batman is still shedding out and in a fugly teenage stage, but hes starting to look like a buck. Dairy breeds sure take a lot longer to grow up compared to kikos.

Pending
I have two pack prospect bucklings avaliable together. I'm willing to let them go as bottle babies and are currently being supplemented with a bottle (dam is a first freshener with triplets) and are already super friendly. One is jet black, the other is black and tan.

Dam out of my kiko pack lines. Every brother she has is in a pack goat program either in Colorado or Wyoming, except one that went to be a herd sire. Sire is a yearling Oberhasli, the kids this spring are his first, but they all have been leggy and correct like him. Herd is tested clean every year for johnes/cl/cae and I just got the test back earlier in the month for this year.

Located in the Panhandle of Nebraska. But can get them to Wheatland, WY on Tuesday. Happy to answer any questions.

Some of my favorite photos from the years with Megatron. From WY, ID, MT, SD, CO and NE, he was a well traveled goat.

Finally had to put Megs (Megatron) down 😥. His lameness/arthritis was starting to affect his quality of life. He was a 10-year-old Alpine wether, and other than his lameness issues, seemed totally healthy and actually was a bit on the fat side this year. In past winters, he had some trouble keeping weight but always bounced back once it warmed up in the spring.

So we weren't expecting his molars to look like this 😳. Never turned down food and always chewing his cud like any other goat. As you can see, the fronts were still in excellent condition and looked like they belonged to a much younger goat.
