More money will soon be available to aid in dredging efforts in Mobile Bay, a move that U.S. Sen. Katie Britt says will lead to more “beneficial use” of dredged sediment.

Britt announced Friday that she was able to help procure an additional $34 million in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s 2026 fiscal plan for operations and maintenance in the Mobile Harbor. That’s a more than 60% increase from 2025. It includes dredging, something that has become a lightning rod in coastal Alabama.

In total, the fiscal year 2026 budget for the Mobile Harbor is around $123.5 million. The Corps has also allocated an additional $33.6 million for two additional projects in the harbor. The Port of Mobile is eligible for those funds as an official “energy transfer port.”

While lower tides are common during the winter months on the Gulf Coast, a strong, persistent north wind contributed to extremely low water levels around Mobile Bay over the last couple days, according to James Spann, with the Alabama Weather Network.

Boats beached, piers dry underneath and oyster cages in sitting on top of the sand. But Eric Bradley, of Navy Cove Oysters, said their oysters, Crassostrea virginica, are actually probably loving the weather. Admiral Shellfish Company, who also operates a farm on Fort Morgan, farms this oyster species as well.

“Tides come back up in the evening. Navy Cove Oysters are an East Coast oyster conditioned to stand up to the summer heat.” Bradley said in a message to GCM. “Oysters naturally love colder weather so it’s not harming our crops. It’s more harmful to our equipment and rope lines that are taking a beating.“
