Several years ago while attending a field day down at Steele’s tavern David Fiske suggested the idea of summer stockpiling spring grasses to bridge the summer grazing gap in the cool season grasses. This year with our local drought conditions in Delaplane we are sure glad to have it. We skipped grazing the one field when the spring flush was in full effect and now after the calves are weaned we ration out a little bit more of it each day to the dry cows. It’s not perfect and not pretty but it beats feeding hay in August.
