🥬 Wow, another glorious day! Have I mentioned my gratitude for this amazing fall weather, for the community that shows up for us and for this fresh SALAD MIX!?🥬

We’ve got bags of fresh, crisp, tender salad mix at the farmstand right now. Grab a bag (or three) and fill your plate with something green, local, and grown right here on our family farm.

🍂 After that, basically the weather is the decider— as long as we have above freezing day time temps we will stay open during the week. Once that frosty weather changes we’ll open just for weekends, Friday through Sunday, 10-6 through November, December, and beyond!

Good morning! Another gorgeous fall morning. Hope-filled and with a produce-filled truckload for the farmstand to start our week. 🌾

Farmer Zac was out early harvesting more broccoli and is now back at the build site around the corner. I restocked potatoes, onions, and garlic. POG for every meal 😆. Green beans and peppers are reloaded, plus what may be the last tomatoes of the season. They will not last long on the counter today! I’m about to bag more black radishes and cherry bell radishes, and watermelon radishes are coming soon.

Yes, we will have carrots soon, and no, you didn’t miss them. Explaining farm losses can be exhausting: the time, effort, and seed lost to failed plantings through the season add up. Farmer Zac was determined to make our last chance for carrots work, and he did. We’re just waiting another week or so before we pull them. Thank you, Mother Nature, for this incredible weather that is letting our growing season continue. We need all the grace we can get.

🧄 It’s also garlic planting time! I’ll add 1 lb bags of seed garlic to the stand today, $17/lb, of Svea: spicy when raw, mild when cooked, a tried-and-true workhorse that grows large and beautiful.

This barn is about so much more than a building. 💔

This is the corner of Anderson and Maidens Rd in Bear Lake, the main farm hub for Zac’s Grandpa Floyd Bowling Sr. in the 70s. It was the heart of a working farm, built by a man who poured his life into this land.
Then came the early 90s, and a tragic fire. In one day, it took the barn and ultimately ended Floyd’s farming career. Zac’s mom still cries when she tells us the details of that day. Some losses live in a family for generations.

For three decades it stood here as the “Burnt Shop,” and the farmland around it disappeared under Autumn Olive. When we took over in 2021, we had to fight to prove it was still farmland. Fought and won. Zac cleared every bit, we put in a well and electricity, and we’ve farmed it for three seasons now. We are LITERALLY fighting to preserve farmland.

This year Zac began taking down what was left of the old barn, and in just two short months, a new building has already gone up. Zac, his Dad Scott, brother Logan, and farmer friend Pat Harvey of Growing Crazy Farmstead are building this dream into a reality. Where there was loss, there’s now new hope. 🌱
What it means for you:
The new barn will house our wash pack equipment and keep us drier, warmer, and better able to face the elements. Year-round growing in Northern Michigan only works with a year-round climate-controlled space to work and store produce in.

Our 2026 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will help us grow more fresh, local produce for Manistee County and surrounding rural communities through expanded cold storage, upgraded post-harvest handling, more retail display space, and a climate-controlled greenhouse. It covers the wash equipment and walk-in coolers for the new pole barn. But the build itself has been entirely funded by the farm, so YOUR SUPPORT is what makes this possible.

Hi fam, the farmstand will be getting a full restock this morning because you completely cleared us out yesterday, thank you to everyone who showed up for some tasty fresh produce.

Frost hit early this morning. 🥶
Every nice-weather day has gone to the new barn build, so yesterday’s rain day became harvest day, and we pulled in everything we could to beat the frost. Thanks to that effort, we’ve got bins of green beans and peppers. When they’re gone, they’re gone!
Also on the stand:
🥬 Salad mix and arugula
🥦 Broccoli has finally entered the conversation
🥔 Potatoes, onions, and garlic
🌸 Three kinds of radishes: Cherry Belle, Watermelon (a thank you goes to ! For this radish addition ), and Black Radishes (a nutrient-rich, liver detoxifier)
🍅 Tomatoes, in very limited supply
A friendly reminder: please don’t go searching for produce outside the farmstand. The pole barn, greenhouses, and neighboring houses (we don’t live there, lol) are private property. Thank you for respecting our privacy and our neighbors’. 💚

Wet harvest morning but the show must go on.

Daydreaming of our future barn that will house all of our wash pack equipment keeping us dryer, warmer, and better able to face the elements — for year round growing in Northern Michigan — will only be possible for us with a year round climatized building to work and store produce in.

Til then a lot soggy, a lil cold, but determined as ever to prevail against the odds. 😘

Farmstand is stocked and open, and the fall temps have returned. 🍂 soup is calling.
Out at the farm, trusses are getting set for the new barn, thanks to the most amazing family and friends who showed up for us at this barn raising: farmer Zac, his dad Scott, his brother Logan, fellow farmer Pat Harvey (of Growing Crazy Farmstead), our homie Will VanFossen, longtime family friend Kevin McDonald, and Zach Zupin of Zupin Crane.
We are so grateful for every one of you. Get ‘er done, boys! 💪

One thing I love about Michigan is our four seasons. We really know how to fully embrace and celebrate each one, and how lucky are we to live where we do, with a fall this beautiful?
Today, Farmer Zac has traded his construction hat for his farm hat. He’s back on the farm filling the stand with the changing seasons’ produce, holding on to summer while fully embracing fall.
Right now you’ll find late tomatoes, garlic, green beans, salad greens, cauliflower, peppers….as Farmer Zac puts it: there’s lots of everything, something for everyone. 🍅🧄🌶️

The way we are 10 places in time at once should be studied.

Heading to stock the stand before me and the girls head to the west coast for a family reunion. Farmer Zac is going to do what he do, keep the farm running, herd two wild dogs, and keep this build going up! Simultaneously an install for a new gas line to heat our other two greenhouses bringing us up to more climatize winter growing space is happening. Greenhouses filled with growing greens for winter harvests. Yesterday I chased two dogs through deep woods who were after a deer. Then made dinner and packed. I ran out of time to process tomatoes this week, so YOU now have the opportunity. Baskets of beans will continue through the weekend. Thank you all for the love and support!
