Today's Food Trivia: June 2nd - Rocky Road ice cream
The Sewing Scissors and The Great Depression
The invention of Rocky Road ice cream in 1929 by ice cream maker William Dreyer in Oakland, California, relied on a bit of household improvisation. Lacking standard kitchen tools for his experiment, Dreyer borrowed his wife's sewing scissors to snip miniature marshmallows and walnuts into small pieces, which he then folded into a rich chocolate ice cream base. When the stock market crashed later that autumn, he officially dubbed the creation "Rocky Road" to give people a literal and figurative reason to smile during the tough economic terrain of the Great Depression.
Global Twist: While Americans expect chocolate, marshmallows, and almonds (which eventually replaced the original walnuts), if you order Rocky Road in Australia, it traditionally features a thick swirl of fruit jam. In the United Kingdom, it is typically packed with dried cherries and raisins.
