Well Ethel didn’t want to be the one to break our bull calf streak so we welcome to the world a perfect little stocky boy, first time momma Ethel delivered like a pro and her little man was up and nursing in minutes.. you really have to admire what amazing natural instincts highland cattle have … I’m thinking this boy might be a shorty bull… what do you think? there’s only a 12.5% chance of a yellow offspring which this boy appears to be .. welcome to the world always happy for easy birth and healthy happy baby🥰

Well this was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise first thing this morning, our registered Spitti Valais ewe delivered twins a boy and a girl, since she didn’t lamb in the spring we figured she just wasn’t cycling yet, but were we ever wrong.. Thank goodness for easy birthing natural mommas

We can’t seem to catch a break this season or last when it comes to the girl boy ratio, 12 bulls and only 4 girls this season,… It’s always a bit of a mental struggle because on the one hand we have had 16 perfect unassisted calvings by both heifer and seasoned mommas, all the babies are improving in overall quality each year, all the calves were healthy and up and nursing on their own in no time, but the cost of running a livestock farm, even as small as ours, is always increasing and the reality is certain characteristics like calf s*x greatly impact the bottom line.. I doubt anyone has the delusion, once they’ve done this a few years, that it’s easy… We are always trying to balance the business of farming with the heart of farming livestock.. There are some good logical things we could do to improve our odds of girls, but for no other reason then it doesn’t make our hearts happy we choose to do live cover… Four different bulls on duty last spring didn’t seem to help, maybe it’s the weather maybe it’s some other variable or many it’s just the flip of the coin and Lady Luck just wasn’t with us this season… I’m happy and disheartened all at the same time to welcome to the world another little bull calf, Tiny Rhonda popped him out in minutes he was up bouncing around and nursing in short order … I’m so grateful for a season of uneventful births we keep pushing forward… one more calf to go likely in the next few weeks then we will be done for a spell and can just enjoy watching the babies frolic and grow… Hope everyone has a perfect weekend and healthy babies in their futures 🥰

Well that’s one way to ring in the special day, absolutely perfect little shorty Highpark bull calf out of Momma Sophie and Teddy 🥰😍 what perfect name for this day should we call this little dude??
